Exciting Times for Savannah: $1.5 Million Donation for Historic Preservation

On Wednesday morning, an exhilarating gathering took place in the beautiful Historic Savannah Foundation (HSF) headquarters located at Columbia Square, bringing together passionate supporters of local history and preservation. The air was filled with enthusiasm as Sue Adler, the dedicated CEO and president of HSF, shared a remarkable announcement that left everyone buzzing with excitement. A significant posthumous donation of $1.5 million was made in honor of two extraordinary individuals, Murray Perlman and Wayne Spear.

A Grateful Acknowledgment

During the gathering, Adler took a moment to express her heartfelt gratitude. “We are deeply grateful to Murray Perlman and Wayne Spear for their incredible generosity and for their heartfelt commitment to historic preservation in Savannah,” she stated with evident pride. This remarkable donation is being hailed as the most significant in the 70-year history of the HSF. The funds will be disbursed over the next ten years, with the first set having already contributed in December 2023.

A Lasting Legacy

So, where will this generous donation go? The allocation includes crucial support for maintenance and initiatives aimed at promoting sustainable operations within the HSF properties. This includes the main headquarters at 321 E. York St., the Davenport House Museum, and the Historic Kennedy Pharmacy located at 323 E. Broughton St.. As a fitting tribute, the main board room at the headquarters has been officially named in honor of both Perlman and Spear, who were deeply involved preservation advocates and history enthusiasts.

Memories of Devotion

Carol Day, a board member of the Murray Perlman and Wayne Spear Charitable Foundation, expressed how pivotal Murray and Wayne were to the Savannah community. “They remembered the ‘bad times’ when Savannah was being boarded up and buildings were being torn down,” she reminisced. “They loved what Savannah had become and gave generously with their time and their energy.” Their history in Savannah is not just in donations, but also in their unwavering and passionate support for the community’s rich heritage.

A Heartfelt Dedication

Perlman and Spear are not strangers to supporting HSF’s capital campaigns. They played an instrumental role in funding the Murray C. Perlman and Wayne C. Spear Preservation Center, opened in April 2022 at the Historic Kennedy Pharmacy. This innovative center serves as a vibrant educational and exhibition space, allowing visitors to delve into Savannah’s impactful historic preservation efforts.

Commitment to Culture and Community

Phil Meeks, chairman of the charitable foundation’s board, shared insight into the dedication of the duo. “Murray and Wayne were very involved in the Savannah community and were incredibly interested in history, culture, and the arts,” he noted. “This gift honors their commitment to Savannah and to the impressive work that Historic Savannah Foundation does throughout the year.” The love and dedication towards preservation have transcended their time, leaving a legacy for future generations.

Looking Ahead

The arrival of this donation undoubtedly marks a new chapter for HSF. It not only pays tribute to two remarkable men, but it also sets a precedent for further endeavors in preserving Savannah’s unique historical identity. As Savannah moves forward, the remembrance of Murray Perlman and Wayne Spear will resonate as a testament to community spirit and a spirited commitment to preserving this beautiful city’s rich tales.

With hearts full of gratitude, Savannah now looks forward to a brighter, more sustainable future in preserving its historic essence, all thanks to Murray and Wayne. Their story is now woven into the fabric of Savannah’s history.
