This coming Monday, Hilton Head Island will come alive with gratitude and respect as it holds its annual Veterans Day Ceremony at the Veterans Memorial Park. The event, set to kick off at 10:30 a.m., will feature a very special keynote speaker: Major General William “Bill” Green Jr., a distinguished military officer with deep ties to the island.
Chaplain Green, who has dedicated over 30 years to serving soldiers, emphasizes the importance of understanding veterans’ stories. “Probably one of the most important things you can do for a veteran is really get to know them and their life experiences,” he shared. “Veterans need your ear.” His words remind us that behind the uniforms and medals are real people with rich histories, sacrifices, and commitments to preserving the freedoms we enjoy today.
During the event, Green will call upon attendees to engage with veterans on a personal level. “I think they’ll understand a lot more about veterans if they hear their story,” he explained. This heartfelt approach encourages the community to listen, reflect, and honor those who have fought for our liberties.
Growing up on Hilton Head Island, Green was nurtured by a close-knit community that played a significant role in shaping him. Raised in the First African Baptist and Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist churches, he credits local leaders and mentors, like his high school principal, Mr. Isaac Wilborn, for instilling values of compassion and care in him. “I absolutely credit a lot of who I am today to the people on the island,” he remarked gratefully.
In December, Green was promoted to Major General, making history as the 26th U.S. Army Chief of Chaplains. In this esteemed position, he oversees a global network of approximately 3,000 chaplains, ensuring that the soldiers’ spiritual needs are met, regardless of their faith backgrounds. “The chaplain’s job is to care for and love,” he clarified. “To walk with, honor, respect, and not to judge.”
Green’s role takes him to the Pentagon, where he is responsible for the spiritual health and wellness of the Army, marking a significant responsibility in today’s military landscape. He believes strongly that spiritual readiness is crucial for effective service. “I think our service members do believe in something larger than themselves,” he stated. This belief, he argues, lays the foundation for a soldier’s morale, loyalty, and ultimately, success on the battlefield.
As he prepares to step into the spotlight at Monday’s ceremony, Green reflects on the evolving mindset among today’s soldiers. They are now more willing to engage in conversations about their emotions and spirituality, an approach that has been welcomed across the ranks. This openness has roots in historical military leaders’ understanding of the importance of a strong moral fiber among troops.
General George C. Marshall once said, “Unless the soldier’s soul sustains him, he cannot be relied on.” Those words ring poignantly true, highlighting the necessity of addressing both the physical and spiritual well-being of service members. Green is committed to ensuring that every veteran and active duty soldier feels valued and heard.
This Veterans Day, the Hilton Head community is invited to join in recognizing the remarkable service of veterans. Major General Green’s inspiring words are sure to resonate deeply, reminding all of the profound sacrifices made to uphold our freedoms. So, come share in the spirit of appreciation for those who’ve donned the uniform, and heed Chaplain Green’s gentle reminder: **listen to our veterans’ stories and appreciate their journeys**.
