Hilton Head Island, SC – A local middle school teacher, Mardy Burleson, has taken a bold step by filing a defamation lawsuit against a group of parents and community members. The lawsuit comes after these individuals publicly accused her of “grooming” students, a claim that has raised significant attention and concern in the community.
The controversy began in January 2023, on the first day of a new semester at Hilton Head Island Middle School. Burleson, who teaches computer science, assigned a survey to her students. According to Burleson, the 29-question survey was designed to help her understand her students better. It included questions about their preferred names, pronouns, and whether they wanted those pronouns used in class or kept private. The survey was submitted through Google Classroom, which meant parents could access it.
After seeing the survey, a student’s parents, David and Susanna Cook, raised concerns with the school principal. The principal advised Burleson to modify some questions to prevent further issues. However, this only escalated the situation.
In her lawsuit, Burleson claims that after the survey was made public, a group including David Cook, local Republican representative Thomas Beach, former council member Michael Covert, and parent Elizabeth “Ivie” Szalai began a “relentless attack” against her. They allegedly made false and defamatory comments about her on social media and during school board meetings.
One notable incident involved Michael Covert making inflammatory statements on social media, where he compared Burleson to a “pervert,” suggesting she was “grooming” her students. These accusations have severe implications, as the term “grooming” typically refers to manipulative actions taken by a predator to establish a connection with a child. Such accusations can cause significant harm to a person’s reputation and career.
Burleson asserts that these accusations have not only damaged her reputation but have also caused her to fear for her and her family’s safety. In a statement, she expressed her determination to stand against those who defame educators. “I want these people to know that their words have meaning, and I want them to see that those words hurt people like me,” she stated.
While Burleson is currently not teaching at Hilton Head Middle School, she is still employed within the Beaufort County School District. The district has opted not to comment on the ongoing litigation, citing legal reasons.
The situation has sparked a broader debate within the community, reflecting ongoing national conversations about book bans and issues of gender identity in schools. Many educators in the area feel threatened by similar extremist behaviors and concerns, similar to those voiced by Burleson.
Burleson is represented by the Equality Legal Action Fund, an organization dedicated to combating misinformation and extremism against educators and the LGBTQ community. Their involvement indicates the seriousness of the issue and the growing trend of litigation concerning educational environments.
As this legal battle unfolds, it serves as a poignant reminder of the challenges teachers face in today’s political climate. The outcome may have lasting effects not just on Burleson’s life but also on how educators interact with students, particularly regarding sensitive topics. The lawsuit emphasizes the importance of understanding and supporting educators’ efforts to create safe and inclusive environments for all students.
With the community’s attention focused on this case, many are waiting to see how it will impact the discussions surrounding education, parental involvement, and the treatment of teachers in similar situations.
