Hilton Head Island Student Shines as National Merit Semifinalist

Hilton Head Island, SC – In an impressive achievement, Christopher Nguyen, a student at Hilton Head Christian Academy (HHCA), has been recognized as a National Merit Semifinalist. His honors place him among the top 1% of high school seniors across the United States for the 70th annual National Merit Scholarship Program.

A Bright Future

This nomination opens the door for Nguyen to compete for the title of National Merit Finalist and the opportunity to receive a National Merit Scholarship. In Spring 2025, nearly $26 million in scholarships will be awarded to students selected as finalists. Nguyen’s high school journey has been marked by an exceptional academic record and active participation in various extracurricular activities.

Academic Achievement

Nguyen, a member of the HHCA Class of 2025, has certainly made his mark. This past spring, he participated in an MIT coding program where he worked with peers to develop AI technology intended for the food industry. His mentor, Dan Harrington, who teaches AP Chemistry, praised Nguyen’s brilliance, stating, “He challenges even the most knowledgeable teachers with questions that make them learn their subject better.”

Research Contributions

Alongside his academic endeavors, Nguyen has also taken part in internships with the Medical University of South Carolina. One of these was with the Bioengineering Department, where he contributed to a project aimed at predicting issues with the temporomandibular joint. Additionally, he served as a Data Research Analyst, co-authoring a research paper that was published in the International Journal of Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology.

A Well-Rounded Individual

Nguyen’s academic pursuits go hand-in-hand with his dedication to community service. He has received the Mayor’s Volunteer Service Award for three consecutive years, logging over 150 hours of service in the 2023-2024 school year alone. His involvement doesn’t stop there; he is also active in fine arts as a member of the Saxophone Quartet and participates in the Jazz Band.

Leadership and Personal Growth

In addition to his artistic and academic accolades, Nguyen is involved in athletics as a member of the State Championship Golf Team. He has held significant roles in various organizations, including serving as a founding member of the school’s VEX Robotics Competition Team, where he has helped lead the team to several awards.

Nguyen has also made a mark in politics, participating as a delegate for Palmetto Boys State and holding a leadership position in the Youth in Government organization.

A Passion for Aviation and Acting

Off-campus, Nguyen is pursuing his Private Pilot License and has logged over 40 hours flying a single-engine aircraft. He is also involved in the acting scene, being Screen Actors Guild Eligible and having a supporting role in a Netflix movie, along with lending his voice to more than 75 children’s books.

Grateful for Recognition

When asked about being named a National Merit Semifinalist, Nguyen expressed his gratitude, stating, “I am extremely honored. This award reflects my hard work throughout high school, and I am thankful for my family and mentors who have helped me reach this point.”

Pride from School Leadership

Doug Langhals, the Head of School at HHCA, praised Nguyen, saying, “Not only does he work hard, but he is also an impressive young man of true Christian character.”

With enthusiasm and determination, Christopher Nguyen is making a name for himself and inspiring his peers on Hilton Head Island. His accomplishments are a testament to his hard work, and the community looks forward to seeing what he will achieve next.
