The school officially broke ground on a massive renovation project that will cost an estimated $167 million. This undertaking aims to almost completely rebuild the school, promising a new era of learning for students.

Freshman Mia Heicman voiced her enthusiasm, saying, “I’m excited to just have a new school in general. I’ve only been here one year. I’m not that used to it. And just to see something new, I think, is exciting.”
Currently, the site may not appear very impressive. However, the first phase of construction will focus on building three-story classroom and art wings. These new spaces are designed not only to be larger but also to encourage various learning experiences that prepare students for future careers, possibly in fields yet to be created.

Principal Steven Schidrich emphasized the importance of a modern educational environment, stating, “We’re preparing students for occupations that don’t even exist yet. So we want to be in the best position to provide students with the skills that they can be adaptive to those types of occupations.”

Teacher Christine Gray, who has 33 years of experience at the school, noted the shift in teaching methods over the years. “I have seen classrooms change from using chalkboards to whiteboards and now computers and tablets every day. Ensuring my students have a modern space to learn is crucial,” she explained.
Importance of Community Support
This renovation project is made possible by the support of the Hilton Head Island community, which backed the $439 million 2023 Beaufort County Schools Bond Referendum. The bond was pivotal in securing funds for this project, representing a significant commitment to education in the area. Principal Schidrich remarked, “To expand our program is we could provide more opportunities for students to learn about different skills and things they can use to support, say, the local economy or even the global economy.”
The needs of the students extend beyond just new walls and windows. The additional and improved facilities aim to provide greater flexibility, allowing students to move around more while they learn. Gray commented on the benefits of extra space, stating, “Having that extra space just gives you more freedom of movement and it gives the kids more learning opportunities.”
