Hilton Head Non-profit Addresses Lack of Workforce Housing

Community leaders in Hilton Head have launched a new non-profit organization aimed at tackling the island’s lack of workforce housing. The organization was validated at a recent town council meeting that saw various residents voice their opinions on the controversial proposal.

Crucial Need for Workforce Housing

The challenge of workforce housing is regularly seen on Hilton Head. Due to the economic structure of the island, many workers struggle with high rents, significantly impacting the accessibility and quality of services and ensuring the sustainability of our community.

Alan Wolf, a board member of the Coastal Community Development Corporation, emphasized the importance of having more opportunities for workers to live where they work. Wolf, who also runs the SERG restaurant group, is part of the new non-profit organization focused on aiding residents in finding more affordable living spaces.

Strategy for Affordable Housing

The non-profit plans to utilise town funding to purchase properties, which would then be converted into workforce housing. This proposal has been approved by the town council, with an initial request of $600,000 that would provide approximately 12 to 13 units.
