Tourism is a multi-billion dollar industry in Hilton Head Island, as per the reports from the Island’s Chamber of Commerce. The peak season of this thriving industry is starting to gather momentum. Local businesses are prepped and ready to serve the influx of tourists, and the anticipation is palpable throughout the island.
From restocking inventory to rejuvenating hospitality services, businesses across Hilton Head Island are bracing for the zenith of tourist season. Last year’s tourism surge had a substantial impact on the local economy, raking in approximately $3.1 billion, attributing to the primary revenue during the summer season. As part of cyclical business trends, the summer bonanza sustains local establishments through the relatively quieter winter months.
An experienced business owner from the Island who has navigated several summer tourist seasons, Jennifer Megilore, exuded an air of contagious excitement. Being the owner of Art Ware, she is no stranger to the prep that preempts the summer rush. Elaborating her perspective, she said, “I think we’re all excited about gearing up for the season. You’re strapped into the roller coaster, you chose this ride you hear the click, click click going up the hill, and you know you’ll go screaming down the other side. But you know it’s going to be a wonderful, wild ride.”
The silence before the storm is said to be intense, and the build-up to summer on Hilton Head Island is no different. As spring made way for summer, businesses are now all poised and primed to cater to eager travelers.
On the hospitality front, the Beach House resort reopened its doors after extensive $13 million worth of renovations, including an upgrade to the Tiki Hut Bar, a fixture in Coligny since 1977. The bar had ceased operations in October of the previous year while the refurbishments were carried out. The newly rejuvenated bar has already garnered strong appreciation, with some patrons allegedly choking up on their first visit after the renovation. Megilore said, “We got all our locals back, they’re having a great time.”
Hilton Head Island’s thriving tourism industry is prepared to ensure that this summer season is enjoyable for both locals and tourists alike. While the economic contribution of the tourism industry is significant, the palpable sense of community and joy brought about by increased human interaction are equally valued. In anticipation of a bustling summer, Hilton Head Island is more than ready to create memorable experiences, but its phenomenal tourist season also serves as a timely lesson in resilience through the cyclical nature of economy and tourism.
