In Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, a remarkable achievement has been made by a student at Hilton Head Christian Academy (HHCA). Christopher Nguyen, a senior, has been announced as a National Merit Semifinalist in the prestigious National Merit Scholarship Program. This program identifies and honors the top high school seniors across the United States, and Nguyen stands proudly among the top 1% of these talented individuals.
As a Semifinalist, Nguyen now has the opportunity to compete for the title of National Merit Finalist and for a National Merit Scholarship, which will be available in the spring of 2025. The National Merit Scholarship program is known for awarding nearly $26 million in scholarships to deserving students each year.
Nguyen’s academic record is truly impressive. He has participated in numerous internships, community service activities, and extracurricular engagements, which highlight both his intellect and commitment to service. Notably, in the spring of 2024, he took part in a coding program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he collaborated with peers to create artificial intelligence technology aimed at enhancing the food industry.
Dan Harrington, an AP Chemistry teacher at HHCA, shared his thoughts on Nguyen’s academic prowess. “I have taught for 24 years and have had many bright students, but Christopher is exceptional. He consistently challenges even the most knowledgeable teachers with questions that enhance our own understanding of the subject,” Harrington stated. He also noted that Nguyen is one of the kindest and most generous students he has had the pleasure to teach.
Nguyen’s experience extends beyond the classroom. He completed internships at the Medical University of South Carolina, where he was involved in projects to develop predictive models for issues related to the temporomandibular joint. In addition, he worked as a Data Research Analyst with a team tasked with reviewing research on pediatric laryngomalacia, contributing to a research paper published in a respected medical journal.
Throughout his high school years, Nguyen has taken a challenging array of courses that include honors classes, dual enrollment courses, and Advanced Placement (AP) classes. He has excelled in these subjects, notably scoring a perfect 5 on all his AP exams. His accolades include seven College Scholar Awards, the prestigious Harvard Book Award, and the Mayor’s Volunteer Service Award for three consecutive years, where he logged over 150 hours of community service in the past year alone.
Nguyen’s contributions outside of academics are equally impressive. He is involved in various Fine Arts activities such as the Saxophone Quartet, Jazz Band, and Musical Theater. Additionally, he has been a member of the State Championship Golf Team and has taken leadership roles in several organizations, including the VEX Robotics Team, which has won multiple awards under his guidance. He is also active in Model UN and has founded a Debate Club, showcasing his leadership skills.
In his personal pursuits, Nguyen is currently working toward earning his Private Pilot License, having logged over 40 hours flying a single-engine aircraft. His talents also extend to acting, as he is a Screen Actors Guild Eligible Actor and has lent his voice to over 75 children’s books.
When reflecting on his recognition as a National Merit Semifinalist, Nguyen expressed his gratitude. “I am extremely honored to be recognized. This award reflects my hard work throughout high school, and I am thankful for my family and mentors who have helped me reach this point. I am grateful for this opportunity to earn scholarships and represent HHCA,” he said.
Doug Langhals, Head of School at HHCA, voiced his pride in Nguyen’s achievements. “Chris works tirelessly to achieve academic excellence, and he is an impressive young man with genuine Christian character,” he said.
