On May 8, Hilton Head Island witnessed a significant milestone in its education infrastructure with a groundbreaking ceremony that kicked off the extensive renovation and redesign of Hilton Head Island High School. The ceremony, organized by the Beaufort County School District (BCSD), signaled the beginning of one of the district’s most ambitious construction projects to date, funded through a bond referendum in 2023.
BCSD officials highlighted that the entire renovation project is expected to take approximately 4.5 years to complete. Speakers at the event included key figures such as Board of Education Chair Christina Gwozdz, Superintendent Frank Rodriguez, and Hilton Head Island High School Principal Steve Schidrich, as well as students from the school. Superintendent Rodriguez emphasized the project’s importance, noting its potential to greatly enhance educational facilities and support the community’s vision for the school.
“This is an exciting time to stand here together on the threshold of a new era for Hilton Head Island High School—one filled with promise, potential, and endless opportunities,” Gwozdz remarked during the ceremony. She added that she was eager to see the campus transform through the ongoing construction efforts.
The conversations around this renovation project began as early as the 2019 bond referendum. The district decided that funds from that referendum would be allocated to develop designs for the renovation. In 2022, officials completed a feasibility study which focused on a plan to keep the school operational during construction, concluding it was in the best interest for instructional efficiency.
The district then engaged the architectural firm Little Diversified Architecture in 2023. Lead architect Don Baus and his team collaborated with community members and the School Improvement Council (SIC) to gather input and refine the design. Chief Operations Officer Robert Oetting highlighted the importance of community involvement, stating, “The committee felt community involvement will be crucial to the success of the Hilton Head High School design process.”
Hilton Head Island High School, which is known as the largest single-story school within the district, was built in 1983 but has seen various additions through the years. The new redesign will be executed in two phases, adding two new stories to the existing structure.
Phase one will focus on expanding learning spaces by incorporating more classrooms, science laboratories, a media center, administrative offices, and special education classrooms among additional facilities. Phase two aims to introduce a new cafeteria that will open up to a large courtyard, enhancing the overall experience for students.
This extensive renovation project will be monitored by the district’s Citizen-Led Oversight Committee, an independent group of volunteers dedicated to overseeing the progress of projects funded by the referendum. This committee’s role will ensure transparency and accountability throughout the renovation process.
For those interested in following the developments or getting more details on the remodel, the school district has created an online resource where updates and plans can be accessed. More information can be found at https://connectbeaufortschools.org/hilton-head-island-high-school?tool=news_feed.
As the groundbreaking ceremony unfolded on Hilton Head Island, stakeholders expressed optimism and excitement for what lies ahead. The renovation is anticipated to provide students with an improved learning environment, aligning with their academic needs for many years to come.
The community as a whole looks forward to the school’s evolution, as it promises to bring innovation and enhanced educational opportunities to Hilton Head Island High School.
