Hilton Head Island Celebrates Legacy of Benjamin Walter “Ben” White Sr. at Family Reunion

In a heartwarming gathering that took place at St. James Baptist Church, Hilton Head Island embraced the rich family legacy of Benjamin Walter “Ben” White Sr., a prominent farmer and patriarch with a remarkable life story. For many attendees, this was more than just a reunion; it was a celebration of values and principles that have shaped generations.

Honoring a Multifaceted Life

The event brought together the descendants of Ben White, who fathered 15 children and became a central figure in his community. His grandson, Napoleon White, took the opportunity to share insights from the family history while emphasizing the significance of education and a strong work ethic. Attendees listened intently as Napoleon recounted tales of perseverance and achievement, a nod to the struggles and triumphs of their ancestor who was born into challenging circumstances as the grandson of a slave.

Despite having received only three grades of formal schooling, Ben White was known for his impressive stature and commanding presence, traits that were mirrored in his parenting style. He faced personal tragedies early in life, including the loss of his mother, which shaped his values and dedication to family.

A Legacy of Hard Work

Throughout his life, Ben White continually stressed the importance of education, family, and community. He became well-known as Hilton Head’s leading farmer, obtaining over 100 acres of land during times when land was both cheap and a valuable asset. Buy land, he advised, and also encouraged his children to seek higher education. Many of his offspring took these lessons to heart, with most of them achieving college degrees, including three with PhDs, and one becoming the first native islander to earn a veterinary degree.

Pillars of the Community

For the Grassland community and St. James church, Ben White was a cherished pillar until his passing in 1955. His family values were deeply rooted in Gullah traditions, emphasizing not only education but also frequent attendance at church and maintaining strong family ties. The sentiment of working hard and ensuring that your actions spoke louder than words became family mantras over the decades.

Interestingly, while some historical narratives claimed that freedmen received land from government distributions after the Civil War, Ben’s achievements were solely the result of his hard work and strategic investments.

Shaping Future Generations

At the reunion, Napoleon White reminded younger family members that success in life doesn’t merely stem from educational accomplishments. His mother’s words about the importance of self-kindness highlighted the need for hard work in conjunction with knowledge to truly thrive. Families were encouraged to reflect on the timeless teachings of resilience, integrity, and community support. A man should shade the ground he stands on became one of the guiding principles for family members to continually uplift and improve their situations.

Continued Legacy

Today, the ongoing discussions in South Carolina regarding the importance of teaching Black history reveal how intertwined these narratives are with the collective heritage of the state. Ben White’s life and contributions are considered deserving of being featured in educational curricula. His story is not simply about a single family but serves as a blueprint for generations on how to face adversities and cherish roots.

As Hilton Head Island reflects on the legacy of Benjamin Walter White Sr., it highlights an enduring dedication to the values of education, hard work, and community that continue to resonate. This family reunion served as a beautiful reminder that while the struggles may evolve, the core principles passed down through generations remain as robust as ever.
