Hilton Head Island Begins Major Renovation of High School

Hilton Head Island, SC – A groundbreaking ceremony on May 8 marked the start of a significant renovation project at Hilton Head Island High School, one of the largest initiatives funded by the Beaufort County School District’s bond referendum. This ambitious project is projected to take approximately 4.5 years to complete, making it a noteworthy development in the district’s recent history.

Community Looks to the Future

The celebration featured several speakers, including Board of Education Chair Christina Gwozdz, Superintendent Frank Rodriguez, and Hilton Head Island High School Principal Steve Schidrich, along with students. Each speaker emphasized the impact this high school renovation will have on the community and the educational experience of students.

“This is an exciting time to stand here together on the threshold of a new era for Hilton Head Island High School—one filled with promise, potential, and endless opportunities,” stated Gwozdz. She expressed eagerness to witness the transformation of the campus over the coming years.

Planning and Design Process

Discussions regarding the renovations began in conjunction with the school district’s 2019 bond referendum. The district identified that funding from this referendum would be allocated to the design of the project. In 2022, a feasibility study was completed to explore options for carrying out renovations while keeping the school operational for students.

Ultimately, the decision was made to keep students on-site during construction since the school was deemed the most effective setting for instructional efficiency. The school district hired Little Diversified Architecture in 2023, and lead architect Don Baus along with his team actively engaged with community members and the School Improvement Council (SIC) to refine their plans.

According to Robert Oetting, the school district’s Chief Operations Officer, involving the community has been a key priority throughout the design process. “The committee felt community involvement will be crucial to the success of the Hilton Head High School design process,” he explained.

Details of the Renovation

Hilton Head Island High School is recognized as the largest single-story school structure in the district. Originally constructed in 1983, the school has seen additions over the years, and this latest redesign will unfold in two phases adding two stories to the building.

Phase one of the renovation will introduce new classrooms, science laboratories, a modern media center, administrative offices, and special education classrooms. In phase two, a new cafeteria will be built, featuring an inviting courtyard that opens into the facility.

Oversight and Expectations

The district’s Citizen-Led Oversight Committee, composed of independent volunteers, will oversee the entire project to ensure that it remains transparent and accountable to the community. Their role is to monitor the various aspects of the work funded by the referendum.
