Hilton Head Island Breaks Ground on $167 Million High School Reconstruction
Hilton Head Island, S.C. – Excitement filled the air on Wednesday as Hilton Head Island High School officially began a significant renovation project that will transform the school almost entirely. The $167 million construction project aims to modernize the facilities and enhance learning opportunities for students.
New Beginnings for Students
Freshman Mia Heicman, who has been at the school for just one year, expressed her enthusiasm about the upcoming changes. “I’m excited to just have a new school in general. I’m not that used to it. And just to see something new, I think, is exciting,” she stated.

This sentiment is echoed by long-time educator Christine Gray, who has been teaching at the school for 33 years. Gray has witnessed numerous changes in classroom technology and techniques over the years, from traditional chalkboards to the current use of computers and tablets. She believes that a modern space is vital for student learning. “Having that extra space just gives you more freedom of movement and it gives the kids more learning opportunities,” Gray remarked, advocating for an interactive learning environment.

The project has received considerable support from the Hilton Head Island community. This support led to the successful passage of the $439 million Beaufort County Schools Bond Referendum in 2023, which will also fund projects at other schools in the area, including a new elementary school and middle school.
Principal Schidrich, reflecting on the strong community backing, noted that the aim is for students to grow up and contribute back to the same community that helped them thrive. “To expand our program is we could provide more opportunities for students to learn about different skills and things they can use to support, say, the local economy or even the global economy,” he said.
