Hilton Head Island, a paradise known for its beautiful beaches and rich culinary scene, is now buzzing with excitement over a new venture led by an island favorite, Dave Peck. If you’ve spent any time on the island, you’ve probably crossed paths with Dave. He’s been around for more than five decades, and his name rings a bell in the restaurant community. Recently, Dave embarked on a new adventure by teaming up with the Jarvis Creek General Store, and we couldn’t be more intrigued!
So how did Dave go from a career in advertising to running multiple beloved restaurants? The story is quite interesting! Dave shared that his path took a turn when he was working with the Anderson Group on Hilton Head. As fate would have it, he crossed paths with the owner of the iconic Salty Dog restaurant. When the owner casually invited him to join the restaurant business, Dave thought, “Why not? It sounds fun!” With no prior experience, he dove in headfirst, starting his journey as a barback before quickly moving up the ranks.
Fast forward a few years, and Dave opened his first solo venture, Low Country Backyard. From there, he expanded his culinary empire with Bad Biscuit while still keeping a watchful eye on his flagship restaurant. His culinary journey didn’t stop there; after a successful run with those establishments, he joined forces with Jim for Pool Bar Jim’s, blending their talents into a beloved local spot.
Despite all of these accomplishments, Dave decided it was time for one more challenge. After selling Low Country Backyard due to staffing difficulties, he found himself feeling a bit restless. “I didn’t want to slow down,” he said, “so when the opportunity to help out at the Jarvis Creek General Store came along, I was all in.” What started as a friendly conversation about advice evolved into a collaborative effort that promises to enhance the island’s dining landscape.
When it comes to the menu, Dave is sticking to what he knows and loves – Low Country cuisine. “I wanted to create something unique,” he explained. Expect to find inventive dishes like a low country boil parfait that transforms a traditional favorite into a delightful layered experience. It’s packed with delicious ingredients like red rice, potatoes, corn, and topped with a homemade crab cake. The menu also offers burgers, chicken fingers for the kids, and a scrumptious five-cheese mac and cheese with barbecue shrimp.
The atmosphere at the General Store? Think laid-back dining under a majestic oak tree. It’s the perfect spot to unwind, whether you’re lounging in an Adirondack chair or enjoying your meal at a picnic table. The big screen TVs offer entertainment without overshadowing the tranquil ambiance of the Low Country, making it a great place to gather with friends and family.
Currently, the food is served from a trailer, but plans are in motion for a permanent kitchen at the back of the restaurant. This would allow for a full-service dining experience while maintaining that cozy general store vibe. “We’re working with the town to get everything set up,” Dave shared, “and I can’t wait to see how it all evolves.”
With his extensive experience and a passion for local dining, Dave Peck’s venture into the Jarvis Creek General Store is set to be a hit among locals and visitors alike. It’s a project borne out of love for the island and a desire to contribute to the community. Stay tuned for what promises to be another exciting chapter in Hilton Head Island’s ever-evolving culinary scene!
