Hilton Head Island to Build an Inclusive Playground at Shelter Cove
Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, is set to add a unique feature to its attraction list; an inclusive playground at Shelter Cove Community Park. The Town Council gave the green light for the ambitious project earlier this August, marking a significant stride in the island’s commitment to promoting inclusivity for all.
A Partnership for Inclusivity
Bringing the inclusive playground to fruition is a joint effort between Hilton Head Island, Miracle Recreation – a well-known playground manufacturer, and Best Buddies – a nonprofit organization committed to creating opportunities for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. This partnership would make Hilton Head Island one of the first municipalities in the country to house a Best Buddies-Miracle Recreation playground. The news was met with applause as the town council demonstrated unanimous support during a meeting held on August 20th.
Proposed Playground Features
While the final design for the playground is expected to be complete in 2025, the Best Buddies’ website gives a glimpse into some of the features the playground might include. The play area will be constructed using poured-in-place surfacing, tiles or turf to ensure that those with balance issues or mobility devices can navigate across the space effortlessly. Furthermore, the playground would provide opportunities for sensory play and incorporate equipment designed for wheelchair users and children with hypertonia, a condition that causes excessive muscle tension.
Shelter Cove Community Park Upgrades
Beyond its commitment to inclusivity, Hilton Head Island is looking to enhance the Shelter Cove Community Park. A project scope was developed in April 2022 to outline plans for the park’s expansion. The master plan, adopted by the Town Council in 2023, includes expanding the park’s promenade, creating a pathway network through an existing forested area, and laying out more passive open lawn spaces with public art displays. The plan also includes additional vehicular parking, an overlook structure with views of Broad Creek, and of course, the larger inclusive playground.
Pushing the Boundaries of Possibility
Hilton Head Island is already renowned for its remarkable landscape and welcoming community. However, the introduction of the inclusive playground at Shelter Cove will only serve to enhance its reputation as a destination that accommodates the needs of all visitors, irrespective of their physical or cognitive abilities.
The town is preparing to begin design work in 2025, with $500,000 earmarked from the town’s 2025 Capital Improvement Plan. Construction is expected to commence in 2026, making the dream of an inclusive playground a reality for the residents and visitors of Hilton Head Island.
