Hilton Head Island, S.C. — On a sunny afternoon, Hilton Head Island High School celebrated the groundbreaking of a significant renovation project that will change the face of education in the community. This ambitious $167 million project is set to nearly rebuild the school, creating a modern learning environment for students.

A Day of Excitement

The atmosphere was filled with excitement as students, teachers, and community members gathered to witness the beginning of a new chapter in the school’s history. Freshman Mia Heicman, reflecting on her first year, shared her thoughts: “I’m excited to just have a new school in general. I’ve only been here one year. I’m not that used to it. And just to see something new, I think, is exciting.”

This project aims to construct new three-story classroom and art wings that will enhance learning opportunities. The new design will allow for larger classrooms and additional learning spaces, a much-needed upgrade for the school’s students and teachers.

Preparing for the Future

Principal Steven Schidrich emphasized the importance of this rebuild, stating, “We’re preparing students for occupations that don’t even exist yet. So we want to be in the best position to provide students with the skills that they can be adaptive to those types of occupations.”

The need for modernization is clear, especially as teaching methods have evolved over the decades. Long-time teacher Christine Gray, who has spent 33 years at Hilton Head High School, noted the advancements she has witnessed in her teaching spaces. “I am really an advocate of kids being able to move around, being able to get up and work at the board, being able to get up and move. Having that extra space just gives you more freedom of movement and it gives the kids more learning opportunities.”

Community Support

The community’s support has been a driving force behind this project. The successful passage of the $439 million 2023 Beaufort County Schools Bond Referendum made it possible for this significant investment in local education. Principal Schidrich highlighted the importance of the local community, stating that this project will help ensure that students grow up wanting to give back, “To expand our program is we could provide more opportunities for students to learn about different skills and things they can use to support, say, the local economy or even the global economy.”

This rebuild represents not only a new building but also a fresh approach to learning that is more aligned with the demands of today’s society. As the school progresses through this reconstruction phase, more educational facilities, including a new elementary school and middle school, are also in the pipeline as part of the overall bond proposal.
