Hilton Head Breaks Ground on New Educational Building
HILTON HEAD, S.C. – In a significant step for the local education community, Hilton Head Christian Academy officially broke ground on a new building that aims to enhance learning facilities for its growing student body. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on a sunny Tuesday, marking the start of a multi-million dollar project estimated at $8 million.
Growing Needs Prompt Expansion
Leaders at Hilton Head Christian Academy, traditionally associated with the island, noted that the school has moved its operations to Bluffton three years ago. This decision was made to better serve their students, most of whom were commuting from off-island locations. Doug Langhals, the school’s Head, explained, “Demographic wise, the majority of our student body was coming from off-island, so we decided to move out here where the student body was.”
Since relocating, the school has experienced a remarkable 65% increase in enrollment. With this surge, a need for additional space has become critical. “We’re in the midst of growth and we’re at a moment where we have filled up the building that we have,” Langhals stated. This new high school building was part of their long-term strategy, which is now more urgent than ever.
Design and Features
The planned building will cover approximately 16,500 square feet and will include classrooms, laboratory spaces, and break rooms to accommodate the educational needs of students. Rick Parrish, the Director of Operations for Choate Construction, confirmed that the new structure will visually blend with the other buildings currently on campus: “Construction will look a lot like the other buildings on campus.”
Student Perspectives
Among the attendees at the groundbreaking were current seventh graders who will be the inaugural students in the upcoming high school. Connor White, a senior at the academy, shared his excitement for the new building. He remarked, “This new building that we had about three years ago has revolutionized the way that I’ve been able to learn whether that be in an open common space or in a classroom like usual.”
As many students signed a beam that will be part of the new construction, White expressed optimism about the enhanced educational opportunities for future students. “As our school grows and our world grows, I think these kids are going to grow up and they’re going to have all these new experiences,” he added.
Financial Support and Future Plans
To date, the non-profit school has raised over 75% of the funding needed for this ambitious construction project. The goal is to have the new facilities ready for students by the fall of 2025. Langhals expressed gratitude for the community’s support in making this dream a reality.
