The State Infrastructure Bank already pledged a generous $120 million for the project, but that funding is at risk if the financial shortfall isn’t tackled head-on. Adding to the urgency is the need to replace the Mackay Creek Bridge, which has been rated as “poor” in recent inspections. This bridge, built way back in 1956 and widened in 1984, is now underscoring the need for immediate action as it’s listed on a statewide priority list.

Let’s not forget that in a previous push for transportation improvements, voters rejected a $950 million sales tax referendum by a margin of 55%, leaving a gaping $90 million hole in the budget.

What’s Next?

To continue the conversation about the bridge’s future, there’s a community meeting scheduled for January 28, 2025. Locals have been extremely vocal at council meetings, discussing everything—some calling the project a “monster bridge” while others eagerly await the changes for better traffic flow.

The U.S. 278 corridor project has been through various proposals over the years, all with the aim of enhancing access between Bluffton and Hilton Head Island. The revamped project also shows sensitivity toward community needs, specifically for the Gullah community, with at least $10 million earmarked to boost the Big Stoney Historic Neighborhood.
