If you’re in Hilton Head this November and have even a tiny bit of curiosity about our feathered friends, you’ll be thrilled to learn about a wonderful array of birding events organized by local enthusiasts. Known for its picturesque landscapes, Hilton Head is not just a haven for beach lovers but also a paradise for bird watchers and nature lovers alike.
As Sir David Attenborough once said, “Everyone loves birds.” Here in the Lowcountry, that love is as alive as ever, thanks to a dedicated group of volunteers from Hilton Head Audubon (HHA). These folks, whether they are naturalists, scientists, photographers, or writers, are eager to share their knowledge and passion for birds with anyone interested.
One standout is Patty Kappmeyer, an avid photographer who spends her time capturing the beauty of Hilton Head’s shorebirds. “I am happiest taking photos, wandering through the marshes and forests, plodding through pluff mud,” she says. Many of her stunning images grace websites and magazines, and she serves as an editor for the Ecoban newsletter. Patty is also known for her monthly column, “Feathers Through our Lenses,”, where she shares excellent tales and photos that deepen our appreciation for the wonderful birds of the Lowcountry.
Mark your calendars for November 2 at the HHI library, where you can hear Patty’s inspiring stories.
Another passionate bird lover is Jim Asmuth, who has devoted his life to enjoying the intricate melodies of avian life. One memorable foggy morning in Connecticut, Jim discovered that a single Hermit Thrush could harmonize beautifully with itself! This sparked his fascination with bird songs, leading him to record and study various species’ vocalizations. Now living in Bluffton, Jim is excited to host a presentation on “Birding by Ear” on November 5, followed by a field trip to Jarvis Creek Park on November 9. Paint your own picture of a Hermit Thrush performing a solo duet while you learn how to identify it!
For those willing to venture a bit further, an event dubbed “Birds and Battlefield” is set for November 9 in Ridgeland, S.C. You’ll gain insight into the historical Battle of Honey Hill while also learning about the recently discovered colonies of endangered Red-cockaded Woodpeckers. Two of these colonies can be found nestled in longleaf pines near Honey Hill. The always-engaging Rich Thomas, an author and local historian, will lead the charge to these fascinating sites. Joining him will be Lynn Hodson, a biologist and Master Naturalist, who is well-versed in the Lowcountry avifauna.
Lastly, you won’t want to miss a talk by Diana Churchill, also known as the “Bird Lady.” With almost two decades of bringing birding to life through her columns and books, Diana is ready to guide participants around Sterling Hill Park in Richmond Hill, Ga., on November 23. This particular park, now thriving with wildlife, was once a sewage treatment area that has been lovingly transformed into a haven for birds. Expect to see everything from migrating sparrows to the elusive snipe during the gentle three-mile walk.
Feeling inspired yet? These exciting events offer a perfect way to embrace your inner birder, meet fellow nature enthusiasts, and deepen your understanding of the amazing bird life in this beautiful area. Whether you’re new to birdwatching or a seasoned pro, there’s something for everyone. And remember, as Sir Attenborough said, “Everyone loves birds!” For more details on how to register for these tours, be sure to check out Hilton Head Audubon’s website.
