Hilton Head, S.C. – New Educational Facility on the Rise
On a sunny Tuesday morning, Hilton Head Christian Academy broke ground on a new building project that is set to cost approximately $8 million. This exciting development comes as the school seeks to expand its capacity to accommodate a growing number of students.
Moving to Bluffton
Hilton Head Christian Academy, which was initially situated on Hilton Head Island, made a significant move to Bluffton three years ago. The Head of School, Doug Langhals, noted this decision was largely due to the changing demographics of their student body.
“Demographic-wise, the majority of our student body was coming from off-island,” Langhals explained, emphasizing that the move was made to better serve the needs of these students. Since relocating, the school has experienced an impressive 65% increase in enrollment.
Meeting the Demand
Despite the increase in student numbers, the facility has reached its limit, prompting the need for further expansion. Langhals shared, “We’re in the midst of growth and we’re at a moment where we have filled up the building that we have.” The new high school facility, part of a master plan, is a crucial step towards providing adequate space for learning.
The planned building will boast around 16,500 square feet and is designed to blend in seamlessly with other structures on the campus. Rick Parrish, the Director of Operations from Choate Construction, described the upcoming facility as including classrooms, lab rooms, and break areas.
Student Perspectives
Current seventh graders attending the school could hardly contain their excitement, as they will be the first class to enter this new building when completed. Senior student Connor White shared his thoughts, highlighting how the improvements seen from the new buildings initiated three years ago have significantly enhanced their learning experience.
“This new building that we had about three years ago has revolutionized the way that I’ve been able to learn whether that be in an open common space or in a classroom like usual,” said White. He remarked on how vital the new structure will be for future students, stating, “As our school grows and our world grows, I think these kids are going to grow up and they’re going to have all these new experiences.”
Funding Progress
Currently, the not-for-profit institution has successfully raised over 75% of the necessary funds for the project, which is a significant accomplishment. Efforts are ongoing to secure the remaining funds, with a target completion date set for the fall of 2025.
This new construction project is poised to play a vital role in Hilton Head Christian Academy’s quest to not only support its growing enrollment but also enrich the educational experience for current and future students.
