HILTON HEAD, S.C. – A new chapter is unfolding for the Hilton Head Christian Academy as it breaks ground on a stunning new $8 million facility. The school, which has been serving students in the area, recognized a growing need for more space as enrollment numbers continue to rise.
Although the name Hilton Head Christian Academy might suggest a location on the island itself, the school moved to Bluffton three years ago. Doug Langhals, the Head of School, explained this relocation, stating, “Demographic-wise, the majority of our student body was coming from off-island, and so we decided to move out here where the student body was.”
This wise decision has paid off, as the school has seen a 65% increase in enrollment since the move, catering to the growing population in the Lowcountry. However, the school has now reached its current building’s capacity, prompting the need for an expansion.
The new building, designed to be a spacious 16,500 square feet, will include classrooms, lab rooms, and break rooms. Rick Parrish, the Director of Operations at Choate Construction, expressed that “construction will look a lot like the other buildings on campus.” This ensures a cohesive feel across the school, promoting a welcoming environment for students.
During the groundbreaking ceremony, current 7th graders excitedly watched, as they will be the first class to experience the new high school building once it is completed. Senior Connor White, reflecting on their experiences with the school’s facilities, stated, “This new building that we had about three years ago has revolutionized the way that I’ve been able to learn.”
Connor, along with many of his classmates, participated in signing a beam that will be part of the new structure. He shared his excitement for future students, saying, “As our school grows and our world grows, I think these kids are going to grow up and they’re going to have all these new experiences.”
So far, the not-for-profit school has successfully raised more than 75% of the necessary funds for the project, which totals nearly $8 million. The goal is for the building to be completed and ready for students by the fall of 2025. This new addition will not only help accommodate the current student population but also support future growth, ensuring that Hilton Head Christian Academy continues to thrive as an educational institution.
In summary, the groundbreaking event emphasizes the community’s commitment to expanding educational opportunities for its young residents. With plans firmly in place and strong community support, the future looks bright for Hilton Head Christian Academy and its students.
As the school continues to evolve, it stands as a testament to the importance of adapting to the needs of the community and investing in education. More space means more opportunity, and with it, the potential for countless new experiences for future generations.
