Sponsor Our ArticlesHardeeville has awarded a $150,000 grant to the Technical College of the Lowcountry for the construction of the Arthur E. Brown Regional Workforce Training Center. This new development aims to enhance job training and education in the community, providing up to 850 students with opportunities in high-demand industries, and aligning with local economic development strategies.
In a big boost for education and job training, the city of Hardeeville has just awarded a hefty $150,000 grant to the Technical College of the Lowcountry (TCL). This funding is aimed at supporting the construction of the brand-new Arthur E. Brown Regional Workforce Training Center, a project that promises to transform the local workforce landscape.
The generous grant was unveiled during a ceremony held on December 10, 2024. Among the notable figures at the event were Hardeeville’s Mayor Harry Williams, Army General Arthur E. Brown Jr.—the very namesake of the training center—and TCL President Richard Gough. Their presence highlighted the importance of the project, which aims to strengthen economic development in the region.
Excitement built earlier in the year when TCL broke ground on the workforce training center on April 26, 2024. This ground-breaking event came after South Carolina lawmakers approved a significant $10 million funding allocation in 2023. The total estimated cost of building the center is projected to be around $26 million, with additional funding expected to come from local governments, private sources, and fundraising efforts from TCL’s Foundation.
When completed, the Arthur E. Brown Regional Workforce Training Center will feature a remarkable two-story building encompassing 50,000 square feet of classroom and training space—enough to accommodate up to 850 students at a time. This state-of-the-art center will be strategically located on TCL’s New River Campus in Bluffton.
The center is not just bricks and mortar; it’s built around actual needs in the job market. It will offer a variety of programs focusing on crucial industries such as manufacturing, automated systems, logistics, business and entrepreneurship, and computer technology. These programs aim to prepare local residents for thriving careers in fields that are essential for future economic growth.
Hardeeville’s Mayor touched on how this initiative aligns perfectly with local economic development strategies. By providing training in high-demand sectors like aerospace, defense, green energy, and cybersecurity, the center aims to attract new companies while creating valuable employment opportunities for residents in Hardeeville and beyond.
Officials stress the critical role of workforce training in addressing the region’s ongoing growth challenges. Hardeeville Assistant City Manager highlighted that the center will serve as a pivotal point for meeting the demands of a rapidly evolving job market. The presence of representatives from the Hardeeville City Council, Beaufort Economic Development Corporation, and TCL’s Foundation at the grant presentation created a sense of unity among key stakeholders working together for the community’s benefit.
On top of that, the area is poised for extensive economic development with plans for approximately 6 million square feet of warehouse and industrial space. This commitment reinforces TCL’s significant role as a primary provider of higher education and workforce training, serving an estimated 5,000 students annually across surrounding counties.
The construction of the Arthur E. Brown Regional Workforce Training Center is more than just a facility; it’s a vision for a brighter future in Hardeeville. As the community rallies around this important initiative, the hope is that many doors of opportunity will open for local residents ready to take the next step in their professional journeys.
