Exciting Shark Sighting: Great White ‘Contender’ Swims Off Hilton Head!

Oh, what a treat it is for shark enthusiasts in Hilton Head! Just recently, a magnificent great white shark named Contender was spotted swimming just off the beautiful Hilton Head coastline. Picture this: a 13.8-foot-long, 1,653-pound mature male shark zigzagging through ocean waves, making his way north before the snow began to fall on the island’s beaches!

Meet Contender

First tagged on January 17, Contender is estimated to be in his early thirties. Does that make him a wise old shark? Probably not, but it sure gives him an impressive presence in the waters! The talented folks at OCEARCH, a nonprofit agency dedicated to ocean animal tracking, were able to accomplish this feat, adding Contender to their list of notable tagged sharks.

From Florida to Hilton Head

Before heading to Hilton Head, Contender was first tracked swimming about 45 miles off the coast near Jacksonville, Florida. To put that into perspective, that distance is comparable to driving from Hilton Head to Yemassee. Incredible, right? In just four short days following his journey north, Contender covered approximately 80 miles of ocean—a remarkable feat in the aquatic world.

What Took Him North?

According to the shark scientists at OCEARCH, the incredible migration of sharks like Contender often depends on various factors such as the availability of food or possibly warm currents that attract them. In the winter, great whites typically migrate south below Cape Hatteras, seeking warmer waters. But here was Contender, making waves and showcasing an adventurous spirit as he explored the southern stretch of the Atlantic Ocean!

How Do We Know Where He Is?

Thanks to OCEARCH’s pioneering tracking methodology, Contender carries a tag attached to his dorsal fin, which regularly sends location pings whenever the fin breaks the ocean surface. The technology uses a handy wet/dry switch that activates the tag’s batteries each time the shark swims above water. However, the tag has a limited lifespan of about five years and will eventually corrode, though it allows ocean lovers to keep track of Contender’s adventures during that time.

Part of a Bigger Picture

Contender isn’t alone in this journey. He joins the broad population of white sharks that migrate between Nova Scotia and the Gulf of Mexico, a range exceeding 2,000 miles! OCEARCH is dedicated to piecing together the “white shark history puzzle” that can unveil critical information about shark behaviors, particularly during winter months. The details surrounding their diets, health, and reproductive cycles during these migrations remain somewhat of a mystery.

More Shark Sagas!

Interestingly, other sharks recently tagged by OCEARCH are also making headlines. For example, there is Anne Bonny, a juvenile shark who has traveled more than 8,000 miles since her tagging in April 2023, with regular appearances in South Carolina waters. Additionally, the impressive LeeBeth, tagged in December 2023 with a length of 14 feet and weighing nearly 3,000 pounds, was also located off the Hilton Head coastline.

Winter Wanderlust

Great white sharks are known for their winter migrations from northern regions to warmer southern waters. While the exact reasons behind this migration remain an area of exploration, this ongoing research by OCEARCH is crucial to understanding our finned friends better. Who knows what other adventures lie ahead for Contender and his fellow sharks this season?

So, the next time you find yourself by the coastline of Hilton Head, keep an eye on the waves. You never know when you might spot another fleeting glimpse of the magnificent great white shark as they navigate through their winter odyssey!
