Beaufort Gears Up for a Grand Celebration of Lafayette’s 200th Visit!

Are you ready, Beaufort? This charming city is about to roll out the red carpet for one of its most esteemed historical figures: the French aristocrat and American Revolutionary War hero, Marquis de Lafayette! Can you believe it’s been a whopping 200 years since Lafayette first graced the streets of Beaufort? Well, get excited because the local community is pulling together for a memorable commemoration event that’s making history come alive!

Back to the Future: Lafayette’s Historic Visit

Our favorite Frenchman, who was only a teenager when he bravely fought alongside the Continental Army, is forever celebrated for his pivotal role in the American Revolution. Let’s not forget his duel with adversity at Valley Forge in 1777 and his ingenious strategies during the Battle of Yorktown in 1781, which helped snatch victory from the jaws of defeat against the British! Talk about an impressive track record!

After a remarkable military career and decades later, at the age of 67, Lafayette embarked on what’s fondly known as his “Farewell Tour of the Nation.” This grand excursion spanned 24 states and ended in Washington, D.C., where he celebrated his 68th birthday amidst fanfare and fireworks with none other than President John Adams. But don’t let his age fool you; his heart for the American people was as youthful as ever!

What’s Happening on March 18?

Fast forward to March 18, 2025! Mark Schneider, a Lafayette interpreter and U.S. Army veteran, will be taking on the role of the French hero once again. He plans to re-enact Lafayette’s visit in Beaufort, retracing the steps the famed general took two centuries ago. Schneider, who has been portraying Lafayette for over 25 years at Colonial Williamsburg, is just as excited as the rest of the community to bring history right to the present!

The day will kick off with a stunning procession through downtown Beaufort, echoing the grandeur of Lafayette’s original welcome. And the festivities don’t stop there! They’ll culminate in a colonial ball held at Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park, reminiscent of the extravagant ball that Lafayette attended during his first visit. How amazing will it be to dance the night away like it’s 1825?

Why Lafayette Matters to Beaufort

The Historic Beaufort Foundation (HBF) is working tirelessly to ensure this 200th-anniversary celebration is worthy of the legacy Lafayette left behind. HBF’s executive director, Cynthia Jenkins, assured everyone that this is no ordinary event; it’s a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity” to witness history alive and kicking!

Lise Sundrla, assistant director at HBF, highlighted that Lafayette is revered not just as a hero in France but also as a “Hero of the Nation” in the U.S. for leading troops during the decisive Siege of Yorktown in 1781. It’s this heroic spirit that the Beaufort community is rallying around, prepping celebrations for all ages!

The Heart of Beaufort Remembers

Let’s take a moment to reflect on which historical events have etched themselves into the city’s memory. Lafayette’s visit back in 1825 is hailed as one of the most significant occasions in Beaufort’s rich history. Think parades, salutes, speeches, and a chance to mingle with both the town’s folk and Lafayette’s family—it was a day like no other! Back then, he reportedly greeted the townspeople from the steps of the historic Verdier House, a tradition that continues with plans to erect a marker in front of this iconic site.

Beaufort Mayor, Phil Cromer, summed it up beautifully, stating this anniversary reminds everyone how vital Beaufort and the surrounding Lowcountry have been in shaping the history of the United States.

Prepare for an Unforgettable Celebration!

So mark your calendars, Beaufort! March 18 is going to be nothing short of fantastic, as the community comes together to honor the remarkable Marquis de Lafayette. With festivities that promise intrigue, excitement, and a deeper connection to our history, you won’t want to miss out. Let’s make history fun and give Lafayette’s spirit the grand celebration it deserves!
