Grace: A Piece of History in Palmetto Bluff
Located in the charming area of Palmetto Bluff, South Carolina, the majestic yacht known as Grace has become more than just a boat; it’s a symbol of resilience, history, and community spirit. Imagine a lovingly restored vessel docked safely, ready to take you on a journey through time. Originally commissioned in 1913, this stunning yacht has a fascinating backstory that captivates anyone who hears it.
The Early Days
The yacht’s original name was Sispud II, commissioned by Joseph B. Cousins, a shoe manufacturer from New York. Over the years, Grace has had more than a few adventures and owners. From serving as the floating home for James Adams of the famed James Adams Floating Theatre to hosting illustrious guests like the novelist Edna Ferber—known for her work that inspired the Broadway classic “Showboat”—the boat’s journey is as vibrant as the sea itself. “This vessel has had four names and nine owners, and its charm and history are intertwined with the region,” explains Dr. Gray C. Stahlman, the historian of The Grace Club.
Restoration and Revival
However, in recent times, poor Grace faced a severe challenge. After suffering from a major engine failure in 2021, it was left stranded in a marina, and its future seemed bleak. Just when it looked like the end of the line for the yacht, Captain Lee Leonard and his wife Penny, alongside 45 passionate members of Palmetto Bluff, decided to rise to the occasion to rescue Grace. They worked tirelessly under a project called Operation Saving Grace, and their efforts paid off when the yacht was restored and returned to the water in November 2023.
“Grace is literally part of the foundational fabric of the Palmetto Bluff community,” says Lee, expressing why the club was so committed to saving the historic vessel. “We want to use Grace to bring the history of this area to life.” And life it has brought to this community since its restoration!
A Warm Welcome
Now, Grace is not just a warm reminder of the past; it is also a hub of community activity. The Grace Club is thrilled to invite everyone to hop aboard for social cruises and private charters. They are also eager to dive deeper into educational activities for children, showcasing the rich heritage of the area. Lee mentioned, “We are working with someone who specializes in developing educational platforms to inspire children and engage them.” It’s clear this beloved vessel will continue enriching minds and hearts.
Challenges and Hope
Unfortunately, Grace has recently faced a setback. Hurricane Helene caused significant damage, leaving the yacht unable to sail. The vitality of this historical treasure is now at risk once again. But not all hope is lost! The Grace Club is actively seeking restoration funds to help bring Grace back to her former glory.
