Rock Hill, SC – South Carolina’s football team has gained another promising recruit as defensive back J’zavian Currence from South Pointe High School has committed to the Gamecocks. This announcement was made on Thursday, marking Currence as the fifth commitment in the Class of 2026 for head coach Shane Beamer.
J’zavian Currence stands at 6-foot-3 and weighs 210 pounds. He is described as a four-star prospect by 247Sports, ranking him as the top recruit from South Carolina in the Class of 2026. At South Pointe, he plays primarily as a safety but has also demonstrated versatility by taking on roles on offense as a receiver and quarterback.
Currence received an offer from the Gamecocks back in July 2022 when he was just a freshman. Since then, he has been pursued by various prestigious programs, including Clemson, Michigan, Ohio State, and Notre Dame, among others. His performance on the field has made him one of the most sought-after recruits in the state. This past season at South Pointe, he stepped in as starting quarterback when Cam McMillon was sidelined, achieving impressive stats with 450 passing yards, seven touchdowns, and 202 rushing yards along with two rushing touchdowns.
Currence shared that the ongoing communication from the coaching staff has significantly influenced his decision. He noted the importance of building a relationship with coaches like Torrian Gray, who frequently reaches out, and Derrick Moore, who provides motivational support. “They reach out almost every day. There’s a lot of love coming from them,” Currence explained. He also mentioned the high regard Coach Gray has for his work ethic, which has helped him feel a sense of belonging with the program.
The Gamecocks have a strong history of recruiting talent from South Pointe High School, featuring previous stars like Jadeveon Clowney, Stephon Gilmore, and Devonte Holloman. This consistent focus on players from the Rock Hill area has proven fruitful for the program and continues to be a point of emphasis in their recruiting strategy.
Currence joins a growing list of commitments for South Carolina’s Class of 2026. Recent additions include:
While Currence is slated to start as a cornerback, he has expressed interest in transitioning to safety once the coaches feel he is ready. Currence represents not just a local talent but also a player with immense potential to contribute to the Gamecocks’ future.
The Gamecocks’ football program continues to build momentum with in-state recruits like J’zavian Currence. As the coaching staff focuses on strengthening their roster for the upcoming seasons, Currence’s addition signifies a proactive approach to securing talented players who have local roots and a history of athletic excellence.
