Hey there, music lovers! If you’re in Savannah, you’re in for a real treat. The Riverfront Concert Series is bringing back the indie folk and blues sensations, The Bones of J.R. Jones. This free concert will be happening at the stunning Park at Eastern Wharf on October 17, from 6 to 9 p.m., and you won’t want to miss it!
The Bones of J.R. Jones is the stage name of Jonathon Linaberry, a talented singer-songwriter from New York who has been captivating audiences with his mesmerizing and cinematic blues since 2012. With four critically acclaimed albums and several well-received EPs under his belt, Linaberry has made quite a name for himself in the music scene. You might have even heard his songs featured in popular shows like Daredevil, Longmire, and Graceland, not to mention a commercial directed by the famous Taika Waititi for Amazon!
Jonathon’s journey into music has been quite fascinating. He first dipped his toes into the music world playing in punk and hardcore bands during his middle and high school years. But after taking some time off to focus on college, he found himself drawn back to music through the raw and honest rhythm of the blues. A pivotal moment happened when, working late one night with a friend, Linaberry was introduced to a Blind Lemon Jefferson record. This old Texas bluesman struck a chord deep within him, changing the course of his musical career forever.
Linaberry’s latest album, “Slow Lightning”, marks an evolution in his sound. Moving away from the heavy blues stomp we’ve come to love, it embraces a more haunting gothic noir tone inspired by the rural farmhouse he shares with his wife in the Catskill Mountains. Linaberry reveals how the isolation and beauty of his surroundings have influenced his songwriting, especially during the long, cold nights of winter. It’s a beautiful blend of emotion that’s sure to resonate with listeners.
But wait, there’s more! This time around, Jonathon has introduced subtle synthesizers and vintage drum machines to his music. In a world where some Americana albums might feel overly produced, his use of these electronic elements enhances the authenticity of his traditional string instruments like guitars and banjos. It’s a unique intersection that adds an exciting layer to his performances.
For past concerts at the Savannah Stopover, Linaberry performed solo, but this time, he’s joined by drummer Jeremy Kolker. Together, they’ll be testing out some of the new songs from his upcoming album, which is set to be released next year. “Part of the fun for me playing out in different arrangements is figuring out how to make the songs translate into a live session,” Linaberry shared. For an indie musician like him, bringing along a full band isn’t an option, but this duo arrangement promises to be thrilling!
Opening for The Bones of J.R. Jones will be the talented Andrew Sovine Trio featuring Elli Perry. And if you’re worried about what to munch on during the show, don’t fret! Food trucks like Ark Royal Burgers, Latin Chicks, and Low Country Lobster will be on-site, as well as delicious offerings from Squirrel’s Pizza, Bar by Fleeting, and Honeysuckle Gelato to satisfy your cravings.
This event is absolutely free and open to the public, so grab your friends, bring your lawn chairs and blankets, and get ready for a night of fantastic music under the stars. You know you don’t want to miss this opportunity to see The Bones of J.R. Jones live, along with some tasty food and great vibes! So, make your plans now—it’s going to be a night to remember!
