For those who may not know, Fort Fremont was originally constructed in 1898 during the Spanish-American War. It served a crucial role in the coastal defense of Port Royal Sound and the nearby Naval Station at Parris Island. Today, Beaufort County has acquired a stunning 18 acres of the original fort to transform it into a peaceful park for everyone to enjoy. The Preserve boasts mixed hardwood forests, walking trails, picnic pavilions, and remnants of the historic battery, as well as a History Center showcasing fascinating period artifacts.
Open to the public from dawn to dusk, the preserve welcomes visitors every day of the week. The History Center is specifically open Fridays to Sundays, staffed by dedicated volunteers from the Friends of Fort Fremont, who are eager to share the history and stories of this incredible site.
