Empty courtroom highlighting the seriousness of child abuse allegations.
In a significant case in Port Royal, former Marine Sergeant Ian Futrell entered a guilty plea to felony child abuse linked to his 6-year-old adoptive son. The 40-year-old will avoid prison time through a military diversionary program designed to address his conduct, which follows severe allegations of physical abuse. This includes attempting to choke the child and inflicting visible injuries. The impact of the abuse has caused lasting trauma to the family, raising concerns about the military’s oversight of this case.
In a notable case in Port Royal, 40-year-old Ian Futrell pleaded guilty to felony child abuse involving his 6-year-old adoptive son. Through a military-specific diversionary program, he avoids incarceration while addressing his conduct.
Allegations against Futrell include severe physical abuse of his son, who has special needs and psychiatric disorders:
Futrell served as a gunnery sergeant at the Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, having joined in early 2020. He was separated from the Corps on November 10, 2023, under a general discharge due to inadequate performance and misconduct.
Following the incident, Suzanne Turner, Futrell’s ex-wife, obtained full custody of their two adopted sons from Hungary. She expressed that the abuse has caused lasting trauma for both children.
After the abuse was reported, a medical examination confirmed injuries consistent with the allegations. A grand jury later indicted Futrell in November 2022.
Christopher J. Geier is noted as Futrell’s criminal defense attorney but did not respond to requests for comment.
