Bluffton Calls on Residents to Complete Flooding Survey in Wake of Tropical Storm Debby

In the aftermath of Tropical Storm Debby, the Town of Bluffton aims to bolster its emergency and contingency planning efforts. To achieve this, residents are being asked to provide input by completing a flooding survey. The survey aims to gather comprehensive data on the experiences of residents and the level and extent of damage caused by the storm’s resultant flooding.

Purpose of The Survey

The data acquired from residents’ responses will serve multiple functions. Foremost, it will inform potential revisions to flood prevention measures in the town, possibly influencing changes in policies or infrastructural modifications. An integral part of the town’s stormwater infrastructure, including drains, culverts, and retention ponds, could thus be subject to review and enhancement.

Apart from influencing in-house measures, the data will also contribute to reports made to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and will assist in formulating and implementing community outreach initiatives.

Survey Accessibility

Officials have made the survey available to residents in two formats: hard copy and online. The web address for the online survey is https://arcg.is/10a5Sn. The completed physical surveys can be dropped off or mailed to the Bluffton Town Hall, located at 20 Bridge Street, Bluffton, South Carolina, 29910. The deadline for the submission of both the hard copy and electronic versions is October 31st.

Public Forums to be Held

Beyond the survey, town authorities are keen on capturing residents’ views and experiences in a more personal and interactive way. To this end, two public meetings have been organized. The primary purpose of these meetings is to provide residents with an opportunity to engage in more detailed conversations with the Town staff and researchers, and share their flood experiences.

Details of The Public Meetings

The first meeting is slated for Tuesday, August 20, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Pritchardville Elementary School, 9447 Evans Way, Bluffton, SC 29910. The second will take place on Saturday, October 19, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is unique because it will be held during the Historic Bluffton Arts & Seafood Festival at the Town booth allocated on May River Road.

The Town of Bluffton is grateful for the cooperation of its residents in these procedures. Their input will be invaluable in future planning, prevention, and management of storm-related flooding incidents.
