Beaufort is buzzing with a renewed sense of hope as residents gather to pick up the pieces after the recent turmoil caused by Hurricane Helene. It’s been a challenging time for everyone here, but with help now available, there’s a light at the end of the tunnel. If you’re in the Beaufort area and have been affected, read on for some important information and assistance on offer!
Good news—there’s an in-person assistance center ready to lend a hand! The FEMA Disaster Recovery Center has set up shop at the Burton Wells Recreation Center, located at 1 Middleton Recreation Drive. Residents can drop by from now until October 31st from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., and the best part? No appointment is necessary!
At the center, you’ll find helpful representatives not only from FEMA but also from the state of South Carolina and the U.S. Small Business Administration. They’re on hand to answer questions, guide you through the process, and determine eligibility for recovery assistance. It’s a friendly place where you can get the help you need.
If you’re a resident of Beaufort, you’re not alone; the area has officially joined a list of 27 counties in South Carolina eligible for FEMA assistance. Governor Henry McMaster recently confirmed that Beaufort County was included in a disaster declaration following assessments that uncovered about $3 million worth of property damage in our area.
Beaufort County Administrator Michael Moore shared that the county unfortunately won’t be reimbursed for its expenses related to Hurricane Helene. However, the declaration will enable individuals with property damage to seek support. “If an individual has damage to their property, that’s what this declaration will allow,” he stated. Anyone who has experienced damage should definitely reach out for assistance.
In addition to the personal assistance offered through FEMA, good news for homeowners and businesses! The U.S. Small Business Administration is making low-interest disaster loans available for residents in Beaufort and Jasper counties. Homeowners can qualify for loans up to $500,000 for repairing or replacing their damaged properties. Additionally, renters are also in the loop, with eligibility for up to $100,000 to replace personal items that have been affected.
Feeling overwhelmed? Don’t worry! You can start your journey towards recovery by visiting disasterassistance.gov or give them a call at 800-621-3362 if you prefer talking to someone directly. Either approach is easy, and they’ve got your back during this tough time.
As we continue to respond and recover from the effects of Hurricane Helene, it’s amazing to see how our community comes together. If you’ve suffered from damage, don’t hesitate to reach out for help—whether at the FEMA center or through the loan options available. There’s a solid network of support eager to help you get back on your feet. Remember, you’re not in this alone!
