In Ridgeland this past June 29, a crowd gathered at the Wagon Branch Community Center to participate in an annual event organized by the Families Against Gun Violence. The organization was created to provide much-needed support to families across Jasper County that have been devastated by gun violence.
Families Against Gun Violence was formed in 2015 by LaHoma Scott, who also organized the event. Scott’s family was personally touched by gun violence when her nephew was shot seven times in 2014. As she dealt with the aftermath of this family tragedy, she felt called to reach out to others in her community experiencing similar pain and loss.
“This is an annual event designed to bring everyone together, to support each other’s families, and to show them some love,” said LaHoma Scott. The event this year included guest speakers, ministers, and members of law enforcement, all of whom expressed their support for the families affected by gun violence.
In addition to promoting comfort and solidarity, the gathering also encompassed educational aspects. “The guest speakers brought valuable information about gun violence and crimes in the county,” Scott said. “Awareness and education about these issues are vital considering the increasing instances of fatal shootings in our community.”
Beyond emotional support and awareness, the event also featured a food offer and a book bag giveaway for children in attendance. The organization actively participates in other community events throughout the year, emphasizing family support and unity.
“All of us need a support system when going through hardships like these. Our initiative continues to be a source for families to connect with and support one another,” she stated.
The Families Against Gun Violence is a non-profit organization that relies on donations to fund annual events like the one hosted on June 29. Those wishing to support the organization can contact LaHoma Scott directly. All funds collected go directly to organizing events that support families affected by gun violence.
“By supporting these events, we are taking a step toward unity and healing in our community,” Scott implored.
Fully committed to eradicating gun violence in the community and offering essential support to affected families, Families Against Gun Violence continues to champion this cause. Through initiatives such as the annual event in Ridgeland, the organization hopes to bring comfort, knowledge, and change to the crisis of gun violence in Jasper County.
