Exciting Safety Upgrades for Pedestrians and Cyclists Coming to Hilton Head’s U.S. 278 Crosswalks

Exciting Changes Coming to Hilton Head’s Crosswalks!

Residents and visitors of Hilton Head Island will soon have a reason to breathe a little easier as they navigate the bustling streets. Everyone knows that crossing the busy U.S. 278 can sometimes feel like a game of dodgeball with cars zooming by at alarming speeds. But the good news is that improvements are on the horizon, especially for pedestrians and cyclists aiming to enjoy the beautiful surroundings.

Smart Traffic Lights to the Rescue!

Recently, the island invested a whopping $3.1 million to upgrade traffic lights along U.S. 278 to make them “smarter,” which means less time waiting in traffic and more smooth sailing on and off the island. Along with this initiative, officials are also honing in on safety measures that will benefit both pedestrians and cyclists.

A Focus on Safety with New Technology

As part of the safety improvements, the town is installing push-button and motion-activated crosswalks equipped with cutting-edge technology, including RRFBs or Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons. This fancy term means that these high-visibility lights will flash brightly to alert drivers when someone is stepping into the crosswalk. How cool is that?

Currently, many of Hilton Head’s crosswalks along U.S. 278 lack traffic lights, creating what’s known in traffic engineering jargon as “non-signalized intersections.” Unfortunately, these crossings aren’t the most pedestrian-friendly, especially with cars flying by at speeds of 45 mph or more. However, changes are coming specifically at two high-traffic spots: Palmetto Parkway and Northridge Drive.

Aiming for a Million-Dollar Safety Upgrade

The enhancements planned for these intersections are part of a larger effort that includes a $600,000 agreement with county funding and traffic impact fees. Overall, the total cost for improvements is pushing around a cool million dollars. Jim Iwanicki, Transportation Program Manager for Hilton Head, explained that the enhancements aim to bolster safety for both pedestrians and cyclists. “We’re taking real steps to make things safer out here,” he shared.

Crossing Made Easier

The revamped crosswalks will introduce a two-stage system to help pedestrians navigate the eight lanes of highway traffic. Walkers will find poles on either side of the road equipped with buttons to activate the flashing lights. Once the traffic stops, they can cross to a median for a moment of refuge before activating the lights for the second half of their crossing.

Of course, it’s essential to remember that while there will be systems in place to help folks cross safely, being cautious is key. Beaufort County Sheriff, PJ Tanner, highlighted that even with the new technology, pedestrians should not take safety for granted. “You’ve got to be patient,” he advises, reinforcing the idea that safety is a two-way street, requiring awareness from both pedestrians and drivers.

Statistics That Demand Attention

Unfortunately, the need for these enhancements is underscored by some alarming statistics. A recent speed study revealed that the average drivers on U.S. 278 zoom by at around 49 mph. From 2019 to 2023, there were 414 recorded crashes on this busy highway – and among those incidents were several involving cyclists and pedestrians.

Hope on the Horizon

Despite the challenges, efforts are being made to ensure that safety remains a priority. The town has even petitioned for speed limits to be lowered in certain areas, aiming to shift speeds from 35 to 40 mph instead. New signage has already been posted for added awareness, even before the actual upgrades are finalized. The dream is for Hilton Head to maintain its natural beauty while making safe navigation through its streets a reality.

Taking Action

Hilton Head has long been aware of the dangers present at these intersections and is working diligently to fix these outdated safety issues. Individuals like Sheriff Tanner are committed to monitoring these intersections and ensuring that drivers comply with the laws that protect pedestrians. “We’re all fearful of potential accidents, and it’s something we take seriously,” Tanner affirmed.

With the anticipated changes, Hilton Head Island is stepping up to protect its residents and visitors. As these improvements progress, pedestrians everywhere can look forward to feeling a little more secure while enjoying everything this lovely island has to offer!
