BEAUFORT – There’s some buzz in the Lowcountry as Second Helpings, the beloved nonprofit organization that helps feed those in need in Beaufort, Jasper, and Hampton counties, has announced some big changes in leadership! In response to the increasing demands for hunger relief, the organization has decided to shake things up a bit.
First up, we have Amy Colin stepping into the role of Executive Director. She brings a wealth of experience from her time with the Girl Scouts of Northeast Kansas and Northwest Missouri. There, she developed and executed strategic membership plans that maximized program effectiveness and helped engage the community. Now, she’ll have the incredible responsibility of leading Second Helpings in their mission to alleviate hunger.
Mary Ann Bell, the president of the organization’s board of directors, shared her excitement: “I am very pleased to welcome Amy to Second Helpings. Her experience as an executive with the nonprofit Girl Scouts organization will help us further engage the community in our fight against hunger and food waste.” It’s clear that they believe Amy’s a perfect fit to help reach out to the nearly 30,000 residents in the community struggling with food insecurity.
“I’m excited to lead this wonderful organization,” Amy said beaming with enthusiasm. “Second Helpings plays a vital role in our community, and I look forward to collaborating with our partners and supporters to tackle hunger and reduce food waste.” It sounds like this is just the beginning of great things to come!
Up next, the organization has created a brand-new role, the Director of Operations, which will be filled by Marcus Tanner. Previously serving as Executive Director, Marcus will now focus 100% on all aspects of food rescue! This new position is grant-funded through the Community Foundation of the Lowcountry, which is a fantastic way to help expand and improve their outreach.
According to Mary Ann Bell, “Last year, Second Helpings rescued and distributed more food than in any other year in our history.” With Tanner at the helm of operations, the organization is set to continue its upward trajectory. His vast experience, including 27 years with the U.S. Marine Corps, will undoubtedly keep things running smoothly as they work hard to ensure food donations get to those who need them most.
Since joining Second Helpings in 2022, Tanner has already made significant contributions by implementing a data-driven approach to food distribution. This strategy ensures food is directed to agency partners based on the number of individuals served. Plus, he has helped the organization add eight new agency partners in underserved areas in Beaufort and Hampton counties!
As these leadership changes unfold, the dedicated team at Second Helpings is eager to continue making a difference in the community. They understand the growing need for hunger relief, and with Amy and Marcus on board, they are more ready than ever to tackle this challenge head-on.
So, how can you get involved? Second Helpings always welcomes volunteers, donations, and community support to help them grow their impact.
