Hey there, Port Royal! Big news is sailing in your direction as a small cruise ship line has made its way to your charming town over the next few months. Yes, you heard that right! The American Cruise Line is here, and they’ll be utilizing the Safe Harbor dock for their ships until the new year rolls around. Get ready to welcome visitors from afar, as this cruise line is known for its delightful journeys along rivers and intercoastal waterways.
In case you missed it, the first of the cruise ships, a snazzy 241-foot-long vessel aptly named the American Liberty, docked at Battery Creek just last week. It’s a sight to see let me tell you! But here’s a little backstory – the American Cruise Line usually parked at the popular Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park. However, this summer, officials from Beaufort decided to halt those dockings. Why, you ask? Concerns were raised about the deterioration of underwater pilings that support the park and worries that the weight of these ships could pose too much pressure on the waterfront infrastructure.
Now, we know change can be hard, especially for the downtown businesses that depend on tourists pouring in through the cruise line’s visits. Some protested vigorously when the city officials announced their decision. But at the end of the day, city officials felt they didn’t have much of a choice considering the state of the park.
Not to worry though— Port Royal stepped in like a superhero! The American Cruise Line quickly pivoted to Safe Harbor Marinas, and voilà, docking was back on the agenda! The cruise passengers are now bussed from the ship directly to the heart of downtown Beaufort. What a win-win! These visitors are now on the hunt for souvenirs, dining at local eateries, and soaking in the sights with guided tours through the historic district.
It’s especially wonderful that this new arrangement allows the cruise line to fulfill their commitments to local tour companies. Passengers are enjoying learning about the unique architecture, history, Gullah Geechee culture, and even the Hollywood films shot in the area. This not only enriches their experience but keeps the local economy bustling.
As we head into the fall and winter months, more cruise ships from American Cruise Lines are expected to continue stopping in Port Royal and nearby Hilton Head as part of their southeast and holiday cruises, which set sail from places like Amelia Island, Florida, and reach up to Charleston. It’s an exciting time for both the cruise line and our town!
So, Port Royal, let’s make the most of this opportunity! Whether you’re a local or a visitor stopping by, there’s so much to see and do as tourism begins to flow through your streets once again. Dive into shopping, savor delicious food, and embrace everything our lovely area has to offer. Who knows, maybe the next time you’re out and about, you’ll share a sidewalk with a cruise passenger enjoying the local charm of Beaufort!
Here’s to welcoming new faces and creating phenomenal memories right here in our community!
