Snow May Fall in Columbia, South Carolina This Weekend

Columbia, South Carolina, is buzzing with excitement as there’s a chance of snow blanketing the city by the end of this week! As we approached the weekend, forecasters have their eyes on a weather system that could bring some winter magic to the Midlands.

What’s the Forecast?

According to predictions from the National Weather Service, there’s a good chance for precipitation on Friday night, stretching into Saturday morning. Meteorologist Chris Rohrbach shared that while it’s still too early to make definitive predictions, the temperatures could dip low enough for that precipitation to fall as snow.

In fact, if snow does fall overnight Friday, it may not just be a light dusting. “It could be more than just flurries,” Rohrbach informed. For those keeping count, this would mark the first accumulation of snow in Columbia since January 2022, when about 1 to 3 inches dusted the area. It’s been quite a while since Columbia saw any significant snowfall, with the previous measurable amounts dating back to 2017!

What Can We Expect?

While we can’t predict exactly how much snow could hit the ground just yet, one thing seems certain: if we do get a winter wonderland, it might not be here for long. As the weekend progresses, the snow is expected to transition back into rain, potentially erasing any trace of the snowy scene. So, if you’re longing for a snowball fight or building a snowman, you might want to act fast!

Road Conditions and Safety

Now, onto something really important—road safety. With predictions indicating rain followed by a mix of rain and snow, there’s a chance that black ice could be a concern on Columbia roads. As we roll into Friday night, if roads get slick, it’s wise to drive carefully. Keep an eye on road conditions and stay alert!

Cold Weather Ahead

As temperatures drop, Columbia residents should brace for some chilly nights. The forecast is showing lows in the mid-20s from Monday through Thursday, with highs only creeping up into the 40s. So, warm coats, hats, and gloves will be your best friends this week! In fact, Friday night is expected to see temperatures plunge to about 27 degrees, perfect for making those snowflakes stick around—at least for a little while!

Wind Conditions to Note

Before we even get to the snow, Columbia will be experiencing some strong winds this week. A wind advisory has been issued for Richland and Lexington counties, set to run from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday. Gusts may exceed 40 mph, making for some blustery days ahead. If you have unsecured outdoor items, now’s the time to bring them in before they go flying!

Monday is also expected to see a high of 61 degrees accompanied by some rain. However, after those passing showers, the Columbia area will shift to colder and drier conditions as we approach the possible snow this weekend.

Stay Tuned!

As we all know, weather can be unpredictable, and forecasts may change as we get closer to the weekend. So, it’s best to keep an ear out for updates as we watch the weather unfold. Columbia might just see its first major snowfall in years this weekend, offering a cozy and magical backdrop for the area. Remember to stay warm, drive safely, and enjoy the festive spirit that a little snow can bring!
