Brace Yourself, Beaufort! Cold Snap is on the Way!

Hey, Beaufort! Get ready to bundle up because the weather is about to take a serious turn! This week, we’re facing some chilling temperatures that are way below our usual cozy averages. The National Weather Service is predicting a low of around 28-30 degrees for Beaufort and about 32 degrees over in Hilton Head from Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. Can you believe the normal low for this time of year is about 45 degrees? Talk about a frosty wake-up call!

Shelters Available for the Cold

As we brace for this icy weather, it’s super important to look out for our community members who may not have a warm place to stay. Thankfully, two local churches are stepping up to help those in need during this cold snap. Starting Tuesday evening, Sea Island Presbyterian Church on Lady’s Island will throw open its doors at 5 p.m. and will be serving dinner, breakfast, and even have showers available! This shelter will close at 8 a.m. on Wednesday morning, so make sure to spread the word!

If you’re down south, you can head to Christ Lutheran Church on Hilton Head Island, which will open at 5:30 p.m. and will provide dinner and morning to-go meals. This shelter will close at 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday. Transportation will be available through Deep Well Project at 5:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. for those needing a lift. Just a heads up, bring your service animals, but leave your pets, alcohol, and smoking gear at home!

Tips to Prepare Your Home

So, what can you do at home to avoid any disruptions due to freezing weather? Well, it’s time to grab those warm blankets and take some precautions! Andy Mattie from the Beaufort-Jasper Water & Sewer Authority suggests that now’s the time to think ahead. Here are some simple steps he shared:

  • Shut off and drain outside faucets and irrigation systems that you’re not using.
  • Try to prevent drafts in unheated areas like crawl spaces or garages.
  • Be prepared with supplies like heat tape, pipe insulation, a portable space heater, and perhaps a hair dryer.
  • Find your home’s master water valve – just in case you need to shut it off if a pipe bursts!

Stay Safe and Warm!

Like we mentioned, it’s going to be a chilly week with these below-normal temperatures prevailing, but don’t worry too much! The forecast does show a slight warming trend with lows expected to hop back into the 40s by Saturday night. But until then, let’s all work together to keep each other warm and comfortable during this cold snap. Stay cozy, Beaufort!
