CHARLESTON, S.C. — On a sunny Saturday afternoon in Wassaw Sound, the local Coast Guard team from Air Station Savannah sprang into action, showcasing their commitment to safety on the water. A 33-year-old man had found himself in a tricky situation when the recreational vessel he was on, named Lulu, encountered some unexpected troubles.
During what should have been a fun day on the water, the man attempted to unground his boat but unfortunately came into contact with the vessel’s propeller. This kind of accident is always a danger when maneuvering boats, and it certainly took a turn for the worse that day. At precisely 1:55 p.m., Chatham County Marine Patrol officers alerted the Coast Guard, requesting urgent air support to transport the injured man.
Once the call came through, the team sprang into motion. The MH-65 Dolphin helicopter was quickly dispatched to the scene. Lt. Hunter Shortly, part of the rescue crew, expressed pride in the swift and professional response from all team members. “The urgency of the mission was a fantastic example of our ability to execute in a time of need,” he said. “Every member knew their roles and was able to perform above and beyond to facilitate a lifesaving medevac.”
The crew successfully hoisted the man aboard and transported him to Memorial Health for further medical attention. While we don’t have details on his current condition, the rapid response no doubt played a significant role in his care.
The incident is still being reviewed, with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources stepping in to investigate how this all unfolded. Additionally, commercial salvage teams are working to clear the vessel from Wassaw Sound to ensure that the area remains safe for other boaters.
This incident serves as a critical reminder of the importance of boating safety. Whether you’re an experienced sailor or a casual weekend boater, it’s crucial to be aware of your surroundings and handle your vessel with care. Whether you’re speeding across the water or simply enjoying a leisurely cruise, accidents can happen. Always be prepared and keep a safety plan in mind.
The team at Air Station Savannah deserves a round of applause for their quick thinking and effective rescue efforts. Thanks to their hard work, a potentially dangerous situation was addressed swiftly, ensuring that the man received the help he needed.
To all the members of the Coast Guard who put their lives on the line to keep others safe, we truly appreciate your dedication and resilience. Every day, men and women like those in the Air Station Savannah show up to serve and protect, making a world of difference for people enjoying our beautiful waterways.
As we move forward, let’s all take a moment to be grateful for these brave individuals who are always ready to leap into action. Stay safe out there, and as always, let’s look out for one another while enjoying the splendor of the great outdoors!
