Chilly Weather Heads Our Way in the Lowcountry

As we step into the middle of November, the lovely Lowcountry braced for a quiet but chilly week. A cold front is rolling through the area, and it’s set to change our typically mild temperatures into something much cooler. Grab your favorite sweater; you’re going to need it!

The Weather Forecast

According to local meteorologists, temperatures are going to take a noticeable dip. “It is going to get quite a bit colder Wednesday night into the weekend,” shared Peter Mohlin, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service office in Charleston. With nightly lows expected to plunge into the 30s, it’s a clear sign that winter is knocking on our doors a bit earlier than usual.

Looking ahead, the forecast predicts a mix of clouds and sun in the morning on November 19, giving way to cloudy skies in the afternoon. The high is expected to reach around 74°F. But don’t get too comfortable just yet! As night falls, showers are expected to roll in, transitioning into what looks like a steady rain. The temperature dip to a low of 64°F makes it feel even chillier, with an 80% chance of rain to keep things cozy indoors.

A Glimpse into the Atlantic

As we head towards the weekend, there is a slight chance of rain due to remnants of Tropical Depression Sara which is meandering over the northern Gulf of Mexico. Fortunately, significant rainfall accumulation isn’t anticipated according to Mohlin, so there’s no need to worry about flooding.

On a brighter note, the Atlantic has grown dim in terms of storm activity following the departure of Tropical Depression Sara, which had a more significant impact on Central America. The hurricane season officially wraps up on November 30, and while November hurricanes are rare, they have occurred in the past. According to historical data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), there have only been four hurricanes to make landfall in the U.S. in November since records began in 1851.

Winter Weather Ahead

While we’re breathing a sigh of relief at the moment, the forecast ahead indicates a potential shift for winter weather. The latest report from NOAA shows a 57 percent chance of a weak La Niña forming before the end of November. This would likely result in milder and drier conditions for the southern tier of the country, while winter storms are predicted to track further north.

As the weekend approaches, it might be the perfect time to plan some indoor activities or enjoy a cozy night in. Whether it’s diving into that book you’ve meant to read, or binging your favorite shows, there’s plenty to do while the chill sets in.

Getting Ready for the Chills

Local residents should make sure to prepare for the drop in temperatures with warm clothing and make necessary adjustments to home heating as needed. For those looking to get outside, layering is the key! Don’t forget to keep an umbrella handy too—just in case those showers decide to stick around longer than expected.

As the week unfolds, stay safe, stay warm, and enjoy the peacefulness that this cooler weather brings. The Lowcountry may be cooling down, but it’s still a beautiful time of the year in our charming coastal community.
