Beaufort Gets a Boost: New Childcare Center Opens for Hospital Staff

Beaufort, a growing gem in South Carolina, is going above and beyond to help its working parents! That’s right, the daily scramble to find childcare just got a lot less stressful for the staff of Beaufort Memorial Hospital. The hospital, in partnership with a well-known local preschool, has recently rolled out a shiny new childcare center on its campus to help ease the burden of working parents.

So, What’s the Scoop?

With an investment of $1.5 million, the hospital has teamed up with Hobbit Hill Preschools, which is owned by state Rep. Shannon Erickson, to offer a fantastic employer-subsidized childcare program called the Beaufort Memorial Learning Center. This state-licensed facility can accommodate up to 99 children but isn’t quite at full capacity yet, meaning there’s still room for more little ones! And this place isn’t just for show; it’s a practical solution to a very real problem, especially as Beaufort County’s population has skyrocketed by 6.3% since 2020.

Why Was This Needed?

With the healthcare industry struggling to recruit and retain staff, especially in nursing, hospital officials recognized that affordable childcare is a huge part of the puzzle. “We had to do this,” said Russell Baxley, president and CEO of Beaufort Memorial. He explained that while they’ve often discussed the challenges workers face in accessing healthcare in Beaufort, the situation is even more grim when it comes to childcare.

After the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, many parents found themselves juggling their essential jobs alongside unexpected school closures. As the only places that remained open during those tough times were hospitals, it became crucial for healthcare workers to have reliable childcare in order to show up for their shifts. Back in September 2020, the hospital temporarily opened a childcare center on Lady’s Island, which turned out to be a lifesaver for many. Now, according to Baxley, the decision to build a “new and improved” facility on the main hospital campus was an easy one.

Construction and Collaboration

Groundbreaking for the new center began in March 2024, and just a few months later, it was ready to welcome families. The opening was celebrated with local officials and community leaders, all frolicking in the good vibes that come from a project aimed at positively impacting the community. The funding for this initiative involved a hefty contribution of over $500,000 from the Beaufort Memorial Foundation, supplemented by various grants and hospital reserves. Importantly, none of the funds came from the state budget.

A Partnership That Works

“It’s been a public-private partnership from day one,” Shannon Erickson emphasized, highlighting how the hospital provided the location while her school manages the childcare services. This collaborative effort not only benefits hospital employees but is also seen as a model for addressing childcare needs in Beaufort.

What’s Next for Beaufort Memorial?

As they continue to care for their growing community, planning is already in motion for a second childcare facility in the Okatie area, but details on who will run that one are still under wraps. Besides that, Beaufort Memorial is also focusing on a $2.8 million workforce development center that uses cutting-edge technology to better train nursing staff, helping to tackle the pesky staffing shortages head-on.

Megan Morris, president and CEO of the Beaufort Regional Chamber of Commerce, cheered the initiative, stating that it sets a commendable standard for others in the community to emulate. It’s all about creating a place where families can thrive while supporting the essential services our community relies on.

So, to all the working parents in Beaufort—less stress, more solutions! The new Learning Center is here to help you find that balance between your professional and personal life, making mornings just a little less chaotic.
