SAVANNAH, Ga. – The 200th St. Patrick’s Day parade and subsequent festivities in Savannah, Chatham Co. saw a significant law enforcement presence striving to maintain public safety. A snapshot of Chatham County Detention Center’s 72-hour bookings revealed a minimum of 54 DUI (Driving Under the Influence) arrests over the course of the weekend. There were also a number of arrests for disorderly conduct and public drunkenness.
The weekend arrests were a collaborative effort by several law enforcement agencies servicing the area, including police departments from Savannah, Pooler, Port Wentworth, Garden City, Thunderbolt, and Chatham County. Support was also provided by the Georgia State Patrol.
Besides the regular Savannah Police Department’s presence, the weekend’s law enforcement effort was bolstered by the addition of 200 officers drawn from external agencies. It also included the Georgia State Patrol’s nighthawks and HEAT units, special divisions dedicated to combating impaired driving.
On the emergency services side, Chatham Emergency Services reported responding to a minimum of 50 calls for service over the weekend, consistent with the demand experienced during the previous year’s celebrations.
A more detailed summary of citations and arrest figures from the Savannah Police Department is expected to be released in the coming days. HERE News Network will provide updates as more information becomes available
All questions and queries pertaining to the figures can be directed to the relevant law enforcement agencies. The public is urged to exercise caution and prioritize their safety during large-scale events such as the St. Patrick’s Day celebrations.
