The second annual “Chalk It Up!” festival will transform downtown Beaufort into an open-air gallery on March 28 through March 30.

Event Details

  • Hosted by: Freedman Arts District, a nonprofit promoting arts in the area.
  • Opening Reception: Kicking off the festival on Friday, March 28, featuring a stage production with Aunt Pearlie Sue and the Gullah Kinfolk and a presentation by historian Valinda W. Littlefield.
  • Admission: Free for all attendees.

Chalk Art Activities

Throughout the weekend, over 40 artists will create elaborate chalk art on pavement canvases, with sizes ranging from 4-foot squares to large vertical panels.

Artists will dedicate nearly 17 hours to complete their pieces while visitors can watch the process from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

Featured Artists

The festival will showcase local talent along with artists from as far afield as Utah. Returning artists include:

  • Chelsey Scott from Atlanta
  • Lisa Gaither from Durham, NC

Entertainment and Activities

  • Live Music: Performances by various local artists, including Ashley Holland and The Deckhand Band on respective days.
  • Food Options: Food trucks and local shops like Southern Sweets and Hop Dog will provide specials for those attending.
  • Kids’ Zone: Managed by Happy Art Studio, this area will offer hands-on art activities for children and families.

Awards and Community Impact

The festival will conclude with a judging and awards ceremony on Sunday evening, where the top three artists will win cash prizes.

Last year’s inaugural festival attracted over 10,000 visitors, with expectations for similar or increased attendance this year. Cherimie Weatherford, program director for the Freedman Arts District, notes the festival’s significance in inspiring and empowering the community through art.
