Celebrating the Life of Emogene Stroman Middleton

Savannah, Georgia—Today marks a bittersweet occasion as we come together to celebrate the incredible life of Dr. Emogene Stroman Middleton, who was born on November 8, 1937, in the picturesque Garden City of Orangeburg, South Carolina. She passed away peacefully on November 28, 2024. Gifts of wisdom, love, and resilience were what Emogene brought into the lives of those who were fortunate enough to know her.

Roots of Resilience

At the tender age of just two, Emogene’s life took a pivotal turn when she moved to Savannah to live with her maternal grandparents, John and Emma Maxwell. Emogene fondly recalled that Savannah opened up a world of prospects and opportunities compared to her hometown. In her words, “no one told us we were poor.” Instead, her childhood was rich with strong family bonds, Sunday school, church activities, and engaging school events. Her home was filled with strong discipline, unwavering Christian values, and, most importantly, an abundance of love.

A Thirst for Knowledge

Emogene’s hunger for learning was evident from a young age. After completing her primary education in Savannah public schools, she went on to attend Mather Academy, a private boarding school in Camden, South Carolina. There, she distinguished herself as a top student, ultimately graduating third in her class of 26 students. With her sights set on further education, she pursued her dreams at Morris Brown College in Atlanta, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology. It was during her college days that she met her husband, Carl Middleton, marking the beginning of their beautiful journey together.

A Life Shared with Love

Married in 1961, Emogene and Carl shared an unbreakable bond, filled with love, support, and laughter. Carl often stood as her biggest fan, cheering her on through life’s many endeavors. Together, they were blessed with three wonderful children: Carl Jr., Carlton, and Carla. Emogene’s dedication to her family was nothing short of legendary, showcasing a profound commitment to nurturing and cultivating strong relationships.

Leaving a Legacy

On November 28, 2024, God dispatched angels to escort Emogene to her heavenly reward, sealing her journey with grace. Her life has been an inspiration and a testament to the power of love, faith, and determination. As friends, family, and the community gather to bid farewell, her legacy will certainly live on in the hearts of those she has touched.

Visitation and Final Farewell

The community is invited to come together to celebrate Emogene’s remarkable life today, December 5, 2024, at First Bryan Baptist Church at 11:00 a.m. The funeral service will be administered by Adams Funeral Services, emphasizing the profound impact Emogene has had on all who crossed her path. Family and friends alike will cherish this opportunity to share stories, express their love, and honor a life lived with purpose.
