Celebrating 20 Wonderful Years in Savannah
Ah, Savannah! What a beautiful city filled with history, charm, and a community that knows how to make you feel at home. This summer marks a major milestone for me—I’ve spent 20 incredible years here in Savannah. It’s hard to believe how quickly time flies, but looking back, it’s been quite the adventure!
A Humble Beginning
Let’s rewind to the spring of 1999. I was working at Emeril Lagasse’s restaurant in Orlando, Florida, in the bustling atmosphere of Universal Studios. I was at a crossroads between TV jobs when a call from a local news director in Savannah changed everything. My wife, Sheila, excitedly relayed the news, which led me to a payphone in the restaurant to call him back. I can still hear my dad’s surprise when I told him where I was headed—“Savannah, Georgia?” he said, reacting with skepticism from an old memory. But I had faith that Savannah had changed since those days.
Finding My Place
Fast forward to now, and I can confidently say that moving to Savannah was one of the best decisions I ever made. Over the past two decades, I’ve built deep connections and friendships that I cherish. I’ve been welcomed with open arms and embraced by a community that made me feel like I belonged from day one. It’s incredible how much the city has transformed, and it’s heartwarming to know I’ve been a part of this growth.
Memorable Experiences
I’ve had the opportunity to witness—and even partake in—some unforgettable experiences while living here. From tea at sea with the Irish Navy off Tybee Island to covering a presidential inauguration in 2008 with some passionate students from Beach High School, each moment has added to the rich tapestry of my life here.
Reflections on Community
As I reflect on these twenty years, I’m reminded of how overwhelming it can be to find your footing in a new city—yet here in Savannah, I felt an immediate sense of belonging. Whether it was the locals waving hello on the street or the countless good-hearted folks who lent a helping hand, this place felt like home almost instantly.
Gratitude for Savannah
And here’s what I truly want to express: Thank you, Savannah. Thank you to everyone who has made my family, including my wife Sheila and daughter, feel welcomed. We’ve embraced this community, and it has embraced us right back. Our various chapters have unfolded here, each cherished and filled with love.
Challenges of Today
Despite the warmth of this community, it’s essential to acknowledge the current craziness happening around us—political disagreements and racial tensions have heightened a sense of division. But even through it all, I hold onto hope and faith in the goodness of the people here.
A Heartfelt Thank You
I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the bittersweet moments over the years, especially the loss of my dear father in 2005. I often think about the conversations we’d have and how he would have loved to see the Savannah I know now. Our everlasting bond, however, has shaped my journey, and I’m grateful to have made so many memories here.
Looking Forward
As I conclude this reflection, it’s clear my story with Savannah is continuing to unfold. Whether it’s savoring delicious meals, sharing laughs with friends, or simply soaking in the beauty of the riverfront, I’m excited about what lies ahead. I may not know what the next twenty years will bring, but I embrace the uncertainty with a full heart.
Final Thoughts
To the entire Savannah community—thank you for being you. It’s been a joy sharing these years with each and every one of you. Let’s keep enjoying all the wonderful moments life has to offer, and I look forward to making even more memories together!
