The city of Beaufort is set to undergo a significant transformation as the historic Cane Island transitions from its roots as a flourishing daffodil farm to a high-end housing and commercial development. This move responds to the increasing demand for residential options in the region.
John Trask III, whose family has deep roots on the island, reflects on the expansive daffodil fields of his childhood, expressing bittersweet feelings about the upcoming changes.
The Cane Island land was sold for $20 million in 2023 and is now under the ownership of Kane Island Development Co. LLC. The proposed housing project includes:
Developers are also looking to incorporate amenities such as a marina, restaurant, and event space as part of the Lower Cane Island project.
Concerns regarding community impact, including increased traffic and land conservation, have emerged amidst planning reviews. Current development agreements permit high-density residential and commercial projects without public input, leading to community discussions.
The first phase of construction for the Upper Cane Island project is scheduled to begin in spring 2025, with initial plans awaiting administrative approval from Beaufort’s Community Development Department.
The agricultural history of Cane Island, dating back to sea island cotton and indigo plantations, has left a significant mark on the landscape. During its peak, the daffodil farm employed around 60 people and yielded an impressive one million flowers per season.
As Beaufort moves forward, the legacy of the Trask family and the natural beauty of Cane Island will be forever marked by this change from agricultural land to a new community.
