Burton Firefighters Respond to Two Vehicle Collisions, Critically Injured Occupant Hospitalized

On May 23, Burton Fire District, Beaufort County EMS and Sheriff’s Office Responded to Scenes of Traffic Accidents

The city of Burton turned into a scene of emergency on Thursday, May 23, when firefighters, EMS, and the Sheriff’s Office were called out to handle two vehicle collisions; one of which resulted in critical injuries.

First Collision: Boundary Street and Parris Island Gateway

The first wreck was reported just after 1:30 p.m., at the intersection of Boundary Street and Parris Island Gateway. Upon arrival, the Burton firefighters discovered a vehicular accident involving two SUVs, one of which was towing a U-Haul trailer that had overturned. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported from this clash. Nevertheless, minor traffic delays were experienced due to the obstruction.

Second Collision: A Dire Incident at Joe Frazier Road and Via Venado

Approximately two hours later, at 3:30 p.m., another BMW call came through. This time, the accident scene was at the intersection of Joe Frazier Road and Via Venado. On reaching, Burton firefighters encountered a dramatically different scene from the first incident. Two passenger vehicles had collided, and both vehicles had suffered significant damage. Regrettably, one of the drivers, an adult female, was critically wounded and trapped inside the wreckage of her car.

Exercise in Brave Rescue and Immediate Stabilization

The operation of extracting the severely injured woman proved to be challenging due to the extent of the damage done to her vehicle. For 15 minutes, the firefighters worked diligently and managed to free the woman from the ruins. Simultaneously, Beaufort County EMTs and paramedics climbed into the wreckage to stabilize her injuries, demonstrating admirable courage and professional competence.

The Aftermath: Transport and Hospitalization

After her extrication, EMS and firefighters transported the woman to a landing zone on Cherokee Farms Road. Here, she was airlifted by a medical helicopter to Savannah Memorial Hospital. The male driver of the second vehicle appeared to have sustained serious injuries and was subsequently transported by EMS to Beaufort Memorial Hospital.

Road Closures and Investigation

The areas around Joe Frazier Road and Via Venado intersection, as well as Cherokee Farms Road, experienced temporary closures. This enabled the safe transport of the critically injured woman and allowed emergency personnel to manage the situation. Meanwhile, the South Carolina Highway Patrol has undertaken the responsibility of investigating the incident. As we wait for details, we hope for a speedy recovery of the involved parties.
