A pair of collisions, both on the Broad River Bridge, caused substantial delays for eastbound motorists towards Beaufort on the late afternoon of Thursday. The incidents, in combination with bridge inspections, resulted in one of the most challenging commutes yet experienced on Highway 170.
Two simultaneous accidents – a two-car and a separate five-car collision – occurred on the bridge, resulting in mass traffic congestion stretching back across Lemon Island. Reportedly, the right Eastbound lane of Highway 170 was obstructed.
Thankfully, no serious injuries were reported in either of the mishaps. Maj. Angela Viens, the spokesperson for the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office, confirmed the absence of severe casualties. However, she disclosed that the causes of the collisions are currently unknown. The responsibility to investigate the incidents will lie with the South Carolina Highway Patrol, which was not present at the accident scene as of 4 p.m. on Thursday.
Adding to these unfortunate incidents, the Beaufort-Jasper Water and Sewer Authority’s scheduled pipeline inspections on Broad River Bridge had already led to a partial closure of the right lane on Thursday, intensifying the aftermath backups. Consequently, this has proven to be a tough day for motorists plying this route, especially for the ones in the eastbound direction towards Beaufort on Highway 170.
Given the traffic concerns, motorists are being advised to exercise increased patience or, where possible, explore potential alternative routes to alleviate the traffic pressure on Highway 170. Joint efforts from all entities involved are ongoing to restore normalcy as swiftly as possible and ensure a more comfortable drive for motorists in the area.
The impact of such events on local communities cannot be underplayed. Traffic delays caused by accidents and other unexpected incidents can significantly disrupt routines, impacting businesses and daily activities. The authorities are advising drivers to consistently be vigilant on the road and maintain safe driving practices to lower potential road accidents risk.
Going forward, HERE News Network will bring updates on the accident’s investigation and any new developments regarding traffic flow improvements on the Broad River Bridge. Stay with HERE News Network for the latest alerts and updates.
