SAVANNAH, Ga.- The vibrant city of Savannah came alive as the 4th annual Books, Bikes, and Badges Back to School Block Party kicked off on a sunny Saturday. The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office took the reigns in hosting this much-loved event, with significant support rendered by Chatham County and the Savannah Police Department.
The block party unfurled a flurry of excitement on the grounds of Andrea B. Williams Elementary School on Sunday morning. Attendees were seen bustling around free book bag giveaways stocked with essential school supplies, snapping them up while the stock lasted.
One major highlight of the day was free bicycle raffles that people could enter, a cause backed by Chief Deputy Gary Taylor of the CCSO. He stated, “We’ve got an excess of 50 bicycles we’re giving away again this year. It’s something we’ve started the first year, and through a reliable partnership, a solid relationship with Dynacraft out in Port Wentworth, we’re able to do that and give that quantity of bicycles away to some of the youth in the community.”
As each lucky raffle draw winner received a shiny new bike, they also got a free safety helmet, underlining the focus on enhancing recreational activity in the community while emphasizing safety measures.
Several sponsors lent their backing to this heartwarming community event. Coca-Cola, First Tee Savannah, League of Brawn, Safe Kids Savannah, and Operation Kid Forward stepped in to contribute to Saturday’s event.
In an active display of community spirit, everyone in the community was extended an invite. The day was filled with shared joy, unity, and the promise of a new academic year made brighter with new book bags and bicycles.
