In a rather unsettling turn of events, the residents of Bluffton found themselves dealing with an unexpected situation this past Sunday. The Beaufort-Jasper Water & Sewer Authority (BJWSA) announced that an estimated 60,000 gallons of wastewater spilled out from a failed force main, impacting the area near the intersection of Okatie Highway and Lawton Boulevard.
According to BJWSA’s report, the overflow kicked off around 12:45 p.m. on December 8, and teams promptly sprung into action to tackle the issue. Luckily, by around 5 p.m., the overflow was successfully stopped, but not without some concern from local residents. Fast forward to the early hours of the following day, and the affected pipeline was repaired and back in action by around 1:30 a.m..
The crews didn’t waste any time initiating the cleanup and recovery process. They aimed to mitigate any further environmental impact as the wastewater made its way toward a nearby retention pond and a wooded area to the east of Pickett Mill Boulevard. Talk about a long day at work!
To keep everyone informed and safe, BJWSA has put up signs in the area. The authority has also reached out to the South Carolina Department of Environmental Services (SCDES) to make sure that they are handling everything properly and addressing any potential effects caused by this overflow.
In case you notice any suspicious spills from the sewer collection system, BJWSA encourages citizens to call them immediately at 843-987-9200. Quick actions can help prevent more serious issues. And for folks looking for more information on the incident or BJWSA itself, the official website www.bjwsa.org is available.
As the cleanup continues, it’s a good reminder to everyone in Bluffton that we play a pivotal role in keeping our community safe and clean. Keeping an eye out for potential issues can help maintain the beauty of our beloved environment. Community vigilance can go a long way!
While this incident might have caused a brief hiccup, the swift response from BJWSA is commendable. It’s a wake-up call, reminding us all of the importance of timely maintenance and community involvement. Let’s make sure to stay proactive and vigilant!
