Bluffton Prioritizing Permits for Tropical Storm Debby Recovery

The Town of Bluffton has announced a groundbreaking initiative, prioritizing permits needed for storm recovery at no cost to residents. The move comes in the wake of the devastation brought by Tropical Storm Debby on Aug. 5. The town staff are primed to give assistance to homeowners needing emergency permits for the damages incurred or to properly document the impact of the storm.

Documentation Key to Support Future Insurance Claims

According to Chief Building Official Rob Currall, it’s crucial to effectively document all damage done. This supports future insurance claims, much similarly to an auto insurance claim in the event of similar damage done by repeated weather incidents.

Basic Guidelines for Emergency Permitting

The town presented these parameters for emergency permitting:

  • Permits Not Required: It’s not obligatory to have a permit for debris removal or minor repairs to prevent further property damage or injuries. Replacing damaged items with identical ones, does not require a permit. Minor water leaks that don’t concern structural, mechanical or electrical systems also do not require a permit.
  • No Charge for Emergency Permits: Any emergency permits will be completely free.
  • Duration of Emergency Permitting: Emergency permitting will be valid for 30 business days. The Town has the authority to extend or cancel this period according to the situation.
  • Special Requirements for Certain Areas: For residents living along a Highway Corridor such as Hwy. 46, 170, 278, or May River Road or in the Bluffton Historic District, pre-disaster photography is needed when applying for a permit. Specific regulations and codes apply to repairs carried out in the Historic District.
  • Structural Damage: If your property has undergone structural damage, bring photographs of the damage. Each case will be assessed individually.
