Bluffton Police Seek Culprit Who Shot Two Cats

BLUFFTON, SC – A worrying trend has emerged in the Lowcountry area, as Bluffton police search for the person responsible for shooting and killing two cats from a local feral colony. The incidents happened on separate days within the last week, but their close proximity suggests a potential link.

Details of the Incident

The two cats, named Stitch and Whitney, were part of a feral cat colony residing near Belfair Towne Village. Stitch was found last Thursday near a dumpster, paralyzed with a .22 caliber bullet lodged in her back. Despite immediate veterinary attention, Stitch had to be euthanized due to her injuries. A small memorial was established in her memory.

Five days later, Whitney was found dead. Investigators suspect she was shot with a BB gun. Authorities were alerted after each event, but the subsequent investigation has been challenging due to the delay between the incidents and the report to the police. Local law enforcement is now monitoring the area and examining surveillance videos for leads.

Feral Cat Colonies in Bluffton

In Bluffton, like many other areas, feral cat colonies are managed by local volunteers. They ensure that the cats are spayed and neutered, and some businesses appreciate their presence for controlling the rodent population. The last reported incident involving these colonies was a 2022 vandalism case.

“It’s very rare to see this kind of cruelty around here,” stated Sgt. Bonifacio Perez, Bluffton Police Public Information Officer. “These cats, they’re feral cats, but they don’t reproduce. They’ve been spayed or neutered, and in fact, they provide a service to local businesses by managing the rodent population.”

Facing the Consequences

Whomsoever is found guilty of these acts could be charged with felony animal cruelty, which carries a penalty of up to five years imprisonment, according to Sgt. Perez.

The Bluffton Police Department urges anyone with information about the incidents to come forward so they can bring justice for Stitch and Whitney and prevent future acts of animal cruelty.
